The first Spider-Man movie predated IMWAN so we never had a thread for it. Let's open one now with these comments from William Dafoe (The Green Goblin) excerpted from a new interview:

Quote:
“The original Spider-Man was a lot of fun because within a scene it could switch from very dramatic to very comic, which is very difficult to do,” Dafoe recalled. “It’s got a great sense of humor, but it’s not light.”

He also shared that he enjoys “doing the action stuff.” For the original Spider-Man, “you were still using wires,” Dafoe said. “There was less CGI, and it was fun because it’s athletic.”

I still enjoy this one--not my favorite Spider-movie but a solid foundation for the ones that followed.
Dafoe is astute in pointing the movie's tonal shifts as crucial to the movie's success.Too many superhero movies can't manage the proper balance between drama and comedy.

I thought it was great, with only the exception of the Green Goblin's costume. I did not like the idea of it being the same battle armor he was marketing. As I've said before, it should have been battle tech suit, but he goes Joker nutso and wears a mask and hood with it. (Which is an essential thing in the comics).

They played his imbalance perfectly -- just for some reason decided the battletech had a mask that already looked like a raving maniac.

But it was otherwise a great, great superhero outing. I think that film is what really turned the tide. X-Men made people think "the effects have gotten good enough that you can do superhero movies now." But Spider-man made people think "You can do great, blockbuster movies." I'll be Spider-man is what caused the Batman Begins project to get some momentum, and we know it caused Hulk, Daredevil, FF 2005. And ultimately made Marvel start cobbling together Iron Man and the MCU.

I watched the trailers over and over again and saw it twice on opening weekend. It was incredible to me, at the time. There are definitely flaws, but they are few. Peter's mask is ripped off or taken off too much, for one, and the Goblin costume is pretty bad, like Jay said. That's about it.

Agreed. If a fan costume can look this good, imagine a Hollywood suit.
