I think "explaining" some things is fine, as long as one doesn't ultimately expect it to be so real one could actually build such tech in real life. The real problem with that approach, however, is it seems to annoy some who care so little for a firmer scientific background or foundation that any such attempt to add some seems like an unwanted effort or distraction. Well, it is supposed to be science fiction - that is, fiction based, however loosely, on science. If one wants sheer fantasy, there is a place for that, too. Regardless, some few don't even mind when some things wildly contradict known science. Trek was, is, and probably always will be particularly bad with distances, time, and how long it actually should take to go from A to B, for example. If one pretty much doesn't ignore those glaring inconsistencies, one can hardly enjoy the vast majority of Trek.

I watched the first episode of season 3 of SNW. It was the second part of the GORN two-parter.
The show looked great and the cast did a great job.
But, this episode really, really felt and looked like an Alien movie, to the point that it diminished the whole experience for me. I have a hard time buying the Gorn as conceived in this show.
The ending of the episode also felt like Discovery (and this is not a compliment).

They actually and most definitely hand-wave away science far, far LESS than Star Wars lol. But your conclusion is, of course, true regardless.
What I mean is they try to be more sciencey than the fact-free Star Wars but generally drown it in technobabble so it has little to nothing to do with actual science.

How many Trek series have there been at this point? That franchise has really proliferated.
