I love Archie comics, from the early Montana days to Dan DeCarlo and everything in between. I like some of the newer stuff, but don't care for the house style these days (Stan Goldberg clones or Stan himself). But it's Betty you gotta love.

The only current comic I read. Typical! I still keep up with Fables, but only through trades from the library...and that's ending too!

http://www.amazon.com/dp/1595825711/?tag=imwan-20 Picked this up at a local comic book convention for $10, brand new. My son got a hold of it, read it, and has declared it "awesome." "As good as Scrooge McDuck and Donald, Bone, and Calvin and Hobbes." He told me he wants more Archie. So, what route should I take getting him more Archie?

Harry Lucey, Samm Schwartz, and, of course, Dan DeCarlo. There are a few volumes of each. You can get cheap Archie comics with like 1000 pages, but there's a lot of not so good post 1990 stuff in there. The collections I mentioned are gold.

Looking closer, that's all the 40s stuff in the book you got, and it's somewhat different from the 50s-80s which is where the above volumes cover. He would still probably enjoy them though. Those guys are considered the Golden Age of Archie, particularly DeCarlo.

So there was a Bronze Age of Archie, then? Were there living vampires? Did Jughead turn into a werewolf? If there are any "Archie On The Loose" comics, I want to read them.

Afterlife with Archie is a zombie series that came out last year. Jughead turned into a zombie.

There sort of was. Life With Archie from 1975 to almost 1980 was horror, science fiction, mystery and adventure tales told with the Archie characters. Some of the covers were pretty cool: http://mycomicshop.com/search?q=life+wi ... d=&PubRng=

That's interesting, Bolgani. Thank you.
It's funny how the mood of the times permeated even the fairly well defined world of Riverdale. I suppose Von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods stuff, In Search Of, The Night Stalker and so on were just expressions of that era's collective fascination with this stuff. It's a fascination that, for nostalgic reasons I guess, has never left me.
I really hadn't known that Archie comics had dealt with that style of subject matter, though - apart from Gold Key, Marvel, and DC I was ignorant of most other companies growing up so I suppose I missed these. Even though I would see Archie stuff at the newsagent when I was a kid I just never bothered with them. I suspect I'd love them now, however.

Life with Archie and Archie at Riverdale High were the "soap opera" story style books, while the other ones tended to be short gag strips (loosely).

Still, nostalgia is a big part of why I love comics despite not having read one for a couple of years at this point. I'd probably enjoy seeing Archie and Jughead fighting robots and dinosaurs more than I would the standard (I assume) dating/teenagers in love stuff that seemed to be at the centre of the whole Archieverse.

You aren't going to see much of that in any of the titles, I'm afraid.
