I missed it in the last Trivia contest, because I never saw Short
Circuit (& didn't even know there was a sequel), but now I
remember that there was a song by El Debarge at the time
called "Who's Johnny?" & it was from the soundtrack. So
obviously that must have been the name of the robot, right?

Steve Guttenberg!

I believe he was created as Number 5, but when "Number 5 is alive" happened, he picked up, was given the moniker "Johnny-5".

I knew I should have bought it on DVD when it came out...

No. As stated elsewhere, there was a bit of controversy when that song was promoted with the film because there wasn't a character in the movie called "Johnny."

Doesn't the whole Johnny thing come from Number Five imitating Ed McMahon?

I think you're confusing the El deBarge song ("Where's Johnny?")with the "Weird Al" Yankovick version of it ("Here's Johnny!")!

Possibly. It's been five hundred years since I saw the movie. But I do know that he did imitate popular culture, such as when he disabled three of his 'brethren" and made them look and act like the Three Stooges.

As to the name, apparently he did start calling himself Johnny, at least according to this interview with the co-author here:

How did you decide on giving no. 5 the name Johnny Five? Did that arise from Debarge's song "Who's Johnny?"

Yes. Brent and I weren't particularly happy with the idea that he wanted to give himself a human name. We thought he should just remain Number Five. But they got the rights to the song, and John Badham felt he should have a warmer name, so they went ahead with that idea. Since then Brent and I have learned that fans really like the name Johnny Five, so I guess we were wrong on that one.
