Rumor: Guess Who May Be Up to Direct 'Man of Steel 2'

While fans may never be able to agree on whether or not "Man of Steel" was a good movie, the head honchos over at Warner Bros. seemed confident enough in its execution to spinoff the entire DC Extended Universe from the film. All the same, it was a bit suspect when they revealed "Batman v Superman" as their next big project. What "Man of Steel" such a disappointment that the man couldn't get his own sequel? To top it all off, when WB revealed the slate of films for the next five years, "Man of Steel 2" was noticeably absent from the lineup.

"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016)
"Suicide Squad" (2016)
"Wonder Woman" (2017)
"Justice League Part One" (2017)
"The Flash" (2018)
"Aquaman" (2018)
"Shazam" (2019)
"Justice League Part Two" (2019)
"Cyborg" (2020)
"Green Lantern" (2020)

It like a big looming question mark over whether or not Superman would ever get his chance to take the spotlight again in his own picture. Things got increasingly dicey when rumors flew around about Ben Affleck's Caped Crusader getting his own trilogy.

So will Superman ever get a second film? If John Schnepp (director of "The Death of Superman Lives") is to be trusted, then yes. What's more, Warner Bros. is looking to get George Miller to direct. You heard me... George Miller, director of the surprise hit "Mad Max: Fury Road" is up to direct a "Man of Steel" sequel.

Here's what Schnepp had to say on the latest DC Movie News show from Popcorn Talk (hat tip to Outer Places):

"George Miller, he's doing Man of Steel 2......Obviously Zack Snyder is doing Justice League 1 and 2, we already got James Wan doing Aquaman – Waterman I think they should change the title– but yeah I think George Miller is a perfect choice to do Man of Steel 2, he's going to bring so much to it."
Schnepp isn't usually one to break random pieces of news, so the fact that he's willing to say it on camera speaks to its credibility. Of course we don't know for sure how true this is, but seeing a George Miller-directed "Man of Steel" would be something to see. While the action in the first film was hard-hitting, Miller's seamless blend of CG and practical effects may help to give the film an added weight that was lacking in the first. What's more, if Miller has his hand in the script as well, he'll be one to keep the pace going, which is a personal problem I had with Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel."

With an already-crowded slate, it's a wonder just when they'd plan to fit this movie in. One of my main worries is the mainstream public getting so overwhelmed by these movies that by 2020, they won't want any more. We'll just have to wait and see.

What do you think of the prospect of a George Miller-directed "Man of Steel 2?" Let us know in the comments down below!

Plus, you can check out the clip for yourself. The news is dropped at the 55:30 mark.

Man of Steel made a ton. Why wouldn't there be a sequel?

Isn't Batman v Superman the sequel? I guess it's now the JLA prequel?

Whatever.

It's like Avengers being the "sequel" of Iron Man 2 and still having an Iron Man 3 which follows the event of Avengers.

Poor Superman, he can't seem to catch a break or get any love. Recently we heard the possibility that George Miller was one of the lead directors being considered by Warner Brothers to direct a second installment in the "Man of Steel" series started by Zack Snyder. And with DC's already crammed (not that that's a bad thing) cinematic line-up, people were doubting if we'd ever see a second Superman film. Well it seems those fears may actual bear some fruit, as Den Of Geek is reporting that a "Man of Steel" sequel is currently on permanent hold.

George Miller is still being considered to helm a DC film, but it's just not known which film that is anymore. It could be a "Man of Steel" film or it could even be the upcoming "Green Lantern Corps" film that is set to release in the coming years. Warner Bros. also could just be waiting for the release of 2016's "Batman v Superman" to see what kind of buzz it generates for a second Superman movie.

Batman, on the other-hand, is doing just fine. With reports that Warner Brothers may be moving forward with not one, not two, but THREE solo Batman movies, it seems he is being set-up to be the Iron Man of the DCEU in that the world will revolve around him in some way shape or form. But who knows, hopefully things will work out and Superman will get his due in the limelight. Hopefully he can be the Captain America of the DCEU in that no one expects him to do so great on screen, and then he blows everyone away.

"Batman v Superman" hits theaters on March 25, 2016.

That's probably exactly what the WB execs are thinking. UNCLE didn't perform, so people must not want to see Henry Cavill movies.

But no one goes to a Superman movie for Henry Cavill. They go for Superman.

I'm very intrigued by the possibility that they may let Henry Cavill try out a 2nd facial expression as Superman, I have to admit.

The Man of Steel Sequel Is Finally in the Works

When Clark Kent joined the Daily Planet at the end of Man of Steel, it was obvious there was more to come. However, that ended up being Batman v Superman followed by Justice League, two team-up movies that have the iconic hero as a supporting player. That’ll change very soon.

The Wrap reports that Warner Bros. has put a Man of Steel sequel into active development. What that means is executives have begun to brainstorm ideas, consider writers, directors and more for a Superman-focused solo film to fit into the DC Extended Universe sometimes after the events in Justice League.

While there are already about eight DC films in various stages of development at the moment, there are still a few “untitled” films with release dates: October 5, 2018, and November 1, 2019. At this point, a safe bet would be the 2018 date will end up being Ben Affleck’s Batman film and the 2019 film would be this Superman movie, but that’s pure speculation.

The DC Extended Universe continued this past weekend with Suicide Squad. From there, things will go into the past next June with Wonder Woman, and then move forward with Justice League next November. That’s when we’ll once again see Superman and, presumably, find out where he’ll might be at when the Man of Steel sequel begins.

At my age, I don't consider 2019 to be "very soon."

So we might still see Kanye West portray Superman? This is good news. :)

Michael B Jordan is rumored to be considered for the part of Superman.
You would have to change Ma and Pa Kent as well.

Henry Cavill Posts Bizarre Video Referencing Superman Exit

Henry Cavill is addressing his impending exit from the D.C. Universe as Superman — sort of.

In a cryptic video posted to Instagram Tuesday, the Man of Steel and Justice League actor, wearing a "Krypton Lifting Team" tee shirt, stares at the camera with a stony expression as a Superman figurine enters and disappears from the frame. "The Blue Danube" waltz, sung by barking dogs, plays over the scene.

"Today was exciting #Superman," Cavill wrote in the caption.

The video followed The Hollywood Reporter's story early Wednesday that revealed Cavill is parting ways with the D.C. Universe after contract negotiations broke down for a Man of Steel cameo in Shazam!. It's unlikely Cavill will return to the Universe given that Warner Bros. "has shifted its focus to a Supergirl movie," which will feature a teenage heroine and follow a much earlier timeline than the recent movies in which Cavill's Superman has appeared.

Warner Bros. also likely won't make another Superman movie for several years, and Cavill recently signed on to star in the Netflix series The Witcher.

Warner Bros., for its part, is remaining tight-lipped about the future of Cavill's Superman. "We have a great relationship and great respect for Henry Cavill that continues to remain unchanged. Additionally we have made no current decisions regarding any upcoming Superman films," a Warner Bros. representative told THR.

On Wednesday commenters on Cavill's video expressed some confusion about what the scene means. "I DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS," one wrote. "Henry what are u trying to tell us bro? Are u trying to get Wb to greenlight a sequel," another said.

Watch Cavill's video above.

Watching WB mismanage the Superman movie franchise for three decades straight has been depressing. Why can't those idiots just figure it out?
