This is a weekly rumour column that I enjoy (I also read gutters so dont worry Rich:)

This week it has a detailed expose on Byrne - very interesting.

Any guesses on who background guy (the source) is?

And before anyoen asks - yes Im the JV he is referring to - Ive been sending him some tips (like the redrawn Xmen pages).

Title edited to reflect spoilage - Good 'ol J.R.

2nd edit "dissembled" not "dissambled"

Well, first of all, regarding the Avengers thing, I know many
people will be upset, since apparently that's a pretty popular
character. Personally I've never thought much of that
character, so it doesn't really affect me either way.

Regarding the Byrne thing...man, that's just...man.

I don't get it. I never get it. If someone doesn't like and / or respect John Byrne then talk about / think about / read someone else. Why do people dedicate their lives to "exposing" John, whether he is right or wrong?

"John Byrne was mean to [fill in the blank]." Who the heck cares?

I'm with James on this, ultimately who gives a rip?

Besides that, I personally think a lot of this stuff is rooted in jealousy, anyway.

Right, whatever. Anyway, I know what a polorizing figure he can be,
so how about we all just nip this in the bud before it escalates into
unWANness? There are several other boards everyone can attack
or defend John Byrne on if they want. Besides, there are other things
worthy of note in this week's column. I know several of our members
are going to be upset about the death of that Avenger that was
mentioned. And how about that Wolverine thing? How idiotic is that?
He's not allowed to be shown smoking anymore? Yeah, they wouldn't
want all of those impressionable kids to see that guy with claws
hacking up people & get the idea that smoking is cool. :?

Besides, Logan's got a healing factor, so his lungs can repair
any smoking damage. It's just stupid.

I just thought I'd amend the title in case anyone actually wanted
to comment directly on the soon-to-be-dead Avenger.

"Dissambled" sounds more accurate than the actual series title ...

In the spirit of IMWAN even I'm not going to discuss it;) But it's good to see that it's existence is acknowledged on this board so folks can make their minds up or not for themselves!

As for the Wolverine cigar thing? Blech, what next are they going to edit all the great scenes out of reprints next? They have heroes who are mercenaries and vigilantes and devote mini series to pycho's and murderers but you can't have a character smoking!!!!!

Good hefty ATR this weeek.

ASSASSIN

A librarian who kills annoying self-important librarians?

If there was any money in that, I'd already own three houses the size of Byrne's mansion.

Thank Christ for that. I come here specifically to talk about those other things.

"Dissembled" is even better. (He's gonna re-re-edit it to "Disemboweled" next ...)

Ok, just read the column, and it's the same spoiler I saw elsewhere.

And I agree with the final comment:
"But let's face it, Marvel killed XXX to make sure Avengers Disassembled had a big dramatic effect on The Avengers."

Hate it for the same reasons I'm hating Identity Crisis. Buying it for the same reasons too (wish I was a Vulcan...)

Okay, I admit it, spelling was always my worst subject in school.
I never realized exactly how bad I was until I got my first electric
typewriter which had a spell-check that beeped everytime you
typed in an incorrect word.

That darn thing was beeping in every other sentence.

In any case, I don't feel like editing the title again. Y'all know
what I'm talking about. It's the Bendis bump-off that's currently
going on in The Avengers. But don't worry, most of the dead
guys will be back some day. It's the nature of comic-books.

I know I'm beating a dead horse here (actually, using laser-sharks on it), but since that is allowed...

I'd like to comment on Lucas' comments on the Special Editions.

I know lots and lots and lots of people who hate the SE's (mostly because the older, original versions are no longer available unless you bought them years ago. Which most people did anyway...), hating what Lucas has done to their cherished childhood memories, and these great films.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing - if started, I can go on for a really long time as to what shouldn't have been changed, and what SHOULD have...*ahem*

Anway, my thoughts are twofold. First, like it or not, it is Lucas' sandbox; we all just got to play in it from time to time. Not a defeatist attitude, necessarily, just a pragmatic one...

And second, this kind of thing happens all the time, but nobody notices.

For instance, say you want to rent a copy of Blade Runner, and see it just like it was originally seen on the big screen.

Well, there are two reasons that you can't. First, when it first came to video, back in the early eighties, they had already added some material to the movie (not a lot, but it still makes it a different film).
Second, when the 'directors cut' came out a few years ago, all the copies of the previous version had pretty much been sold out; now, you can pretty much only find the 'directors cut', rather than the original film.

Heck, when the Cohen brothers did their 'directors cut' of Blood Simple, they actually removed footage, to make the movie move better.

Really, for the most part, when a 'directors cut' comes out, there is no demand for the previous version (well, except in the case of 'True Romance' - Blockbuster rented the original version, while everyone else preferred the extended cut), so the 'original' version basically disappears.

I think the biggest problem with the Special Editions was the fact that Lucas went out of his way to say that the previous 'original' versions would no longer be available for purchase (or to be shown theatrically, but that is another topic/rant entirely). If he didn't say anything, the older version just would have quietly dropped away, and most folks would not have even noticed.

...

having said all that, I would greatly prefer the DVD's to have the SE on one side of the discs, and the original versions on the other side. Kinda like the first boxed set of MST3K DVDs, where they had the MSTy versions of the films (Bloodlust, Skyjumpers, The Creeping Terror, and Catalina Caper) on one side, and the original versions on the other side.

...not that anybody ever watched the other side...I've owned that boxed set for a year, and I've never put the other sides in, anyway :)

Isn't it "depopulated"? That's what this whole storyline smacks of, to me, at least.

Or "discombobulated"? As in "What's with people dying all the time? We're the Earth's Mightiest Heroes! Someone explain it all to me! We were sitting around talking about chicks, and now.."

(All right, sorry...)

As to the character getting killed... One I liked. Until the Bendis treatment in #500.

Bleh.

James - I have to disagree with you - I dont think the columnist hates Byrne - he is just reporting some interesting facts. And like JR said - if your in the "public" spotlight and you have a tendency to shoot your mouth off...well someone may call you on it!

Obviously if he thought various readers did not care about Byrne's antics he would not have included it in the column...people do care...its in our nature to gossip...hell Byrne's the worst offender of this! I wonder who his source is though...obviously someone who used to or is still part of the Byrne board...

As for the Avengers...Ive avoided all spoilers...I cant wait to see the newest issue this wednesday...I hate being spoiled...so Im carefull with my online perusing these days...:)
