“In the music we make in love… in the music we rise above…”

These are songs of love… various aspects of love… the love of a lifetime, the fleeting love, love as a life force, the beginnings of love, the aftermath of love.

Our journey started in the summer in Glasgow where we began to make friends with these songs of love. Every week we would gather in a room behind the Bay Horse Tavern on the south side and the songs would unveil themselves. In the winter we traveled to New York City with a plan to record the songs live.

It was a wonderful experience. Frank, Paul, Stephen, John, Grant, Stevie and Jody… all gentlemen and lifelong friends… abroad in the fine city of New York, with songs of love to sing. We hope you enjoy listening to the fruits of our journey.

With love,

The Trashcans

AmazWAN already has the Japanese import, with the bonus track "Astronomy":

The TCS website has a special offer, where you can preorder a deluxe clothbound edition with two bonus tracks, and if you order before 5/31/09, no joke, they'll put your name in the "special thanks" section of the liner notes, as one of the great fans that has kept the band going all this time. You also get an immediate downloadable copy in 320kb/s DRM-free MP3.

I've been listening to this album the last couple of days, and I'm loving it. Most TCS albums have 2 or 3 AMAZING songs, 8 or so really good ones and 2 or 3 fillers. This one has 4 or 5 AMAZING songs, and 5 or 6 really good ones. No filler.

Pre-realease single is "Oranges and Apples" - a tribute to the late Syd Barrett.

Here's the domestic pressing, due out on July 28th via the Hensley Records label:

Product Description
In the five years since we last heard a full album from Trashcan Sinatras, things have been looking up.
"It's five years since Weightlifting came out, we toured it for two years, then we started coming back down to earth. Mostly, we've been just writing and playing," says vocalist and rhythm guitarist John Douglas. The band has discovered that they're not for the treadmill approach, or being tied to a label and a deal that demands an album every two years.

"The idea to record in New York came up, and it was brilliant. We love that town," says Douglas. "The first time we went there we played CBGBs and it was fantastic." Someone must have been smiling on In the Music.

As an added, and somewhat unexpected sparkle, the band bagged 70s singer-songwriting legend Carly Simon to sing on Should I Pray. "It was sheer chance," says Douglas. "Producer Andy Chase's parents live up in Martha's Vineyard and we went up there when we'd finished in New York just to record a few more tracks. Carly lives there, James Taylor has a place there too- it's a kind of musical hippy vibe. Andy mentioned that he knew her and I said, I love Carly Simon, for me she's just amazing, an incredible songwriter with such a beautiful, distinctive voice, an icon."

"When we play music together, it just seems special," admits John Douglas. "None of us can leave this behind us for any period of time. With this album we gave ourselves space to be creative, and to have faith in what we were doing- and it's totally satisfying."

the band is also playing at the fuji festival:

july 25, 2009 niigata, japan - fuji festival

unfortunately, the band's north american record deal did not work out and the the album release date in north america is now TBD, probably around september.

the uk/ireland release is september 14. "i wish you'd met her" is the first single, followed by "people" and "morning star."

the band will likely be on tour in the uk/ireland in the fall and a couple other tours are being looked at before the end of the year

new t-shirts, cds and other merchandise coming soon on the website and on tour.

you can follow the band at trashcansinatras.com, myspace, facebook, twitter and ilike.

I'll be at the Seattle show.

Oh, and here's the pic I snapped at the show. Great performance, but kind of a weak set list. Of the 3 songs from the new album that they didn't play, 2 were my favorite 2 songs on the album, and looking at the set lists posted on their site, it looks like Seattle was the only place either of these songs (People and Morning Star) were skipped.

Absolutely gorgeous package. Having your name in it is the icing on the cake!

So tell us, Hank, does the music live up to the packaging? Is this a great album?

I think it's the best they've ever done, and they've got fantastic stuff covering the last 20 years.

For those keeping score, the Trashcans were labelmates with The La's on Go!Discs back in 1990. Paul Weller, too.

Here's one of the songs from the new album (that they didn't play at the Seattle show, dammit) - "Morning Star."

Before the lyrics were written, they were calling it "The Jimmy Webb Song." I think that if Glen Campbell were to do another album like his last, this song would be perfect for it, much like Travis's "Sing" was on Meet Glen Campbell.

Thanks for posting that!

I had no idea before reading that that John Douglas and Eddi Reader were married.

Still haven't heard an updated US release date, although it's available for order on http://trashcansinatras.com.

A new video for "People" was filmed last week, and was released today. It makes me smile. :)

This is out today (FINALLY!) in North America. As mentioned, there are 8 live acoustic bonus tracks.

The whole thing can be streamed for free this week at http://www.spinner.com/new-releases#/8

Enjoy! I still love this album.
