On another website I just saw a mention re Who Are You coming soon. This website is going to release a stand-alone blu-ray and mentions (without details) the album will is 'being released in multiple formats' in October.
I'd like to see a 'Who By Numbers' set personally (if not a revisit of Quadrophenia - if they they could finish the 5.1)
But 'Who Are You' is great news.

Two discs of live material without Keith seems antithetical to celebrating this album. I would have preferred two discs of Pete's demos.

I am curious what mix they will reference for Disc One. More faithful to the original - aka 'orginal' MCA CD - or the 96 remix (which I did not care for).

Really looking forward to this. As a huge Who fan, this wasn't the best way for them to go out (the last 47 years have been a footnote for the band though I still like them and enjoy the new music that they've put out in that time) but it's a pretty good album and this box set looks terrific to me. I could have done without the Kenney Jones stuff since he wouldn't become a member of the band until later in 1978 or '79. I'll listen to it though.

Technically Who Are You was the last great Who album (it has Keith Moon) and it truly is a must buy box set! When I saw The Who in 1979 they played many of the songs (but Kenny Jones was the drummer at that point). It was always a great sounding album with some great cuts. The title song remains a must hear tour song.

Maybe won't know for sure until it's released, since Jon Astley did both the original mix and the 1996 remix. But with the wording of the press release, I'd guess it will be the original 1978 Jon Astley mix.

The initial sessions for the album took place at the band’s Ramport Studios, produced by Glyn Johns and Jon Astley. However, the recording process was fraught with challenges and creative tensions. The Who Are You Super Deluxe Edition finally tells the whole story, featuring, for the first time, the rejected original Glyn Johns mix of the album, a newly remastered version of the released Jon Astley mix and fly on the wall rehearsal sessions from Shepperton Studios, which the band owned at the time. It will also feature a wealth of unreleased material including demos, alternate takes and in the case of standout track “Sister Disco,” a previously ‘lost’ guitar solo rescued from the multi-track tapes by Steven Wilson.

I'm in for sure. This was my first Who album, so I probably love it a lot more than I would have had I been familiar with what came before. And since Keith died before they could tour, and I saw them a few months after the show in the set, I have no problem with the '79 recordings.

Absolutely in. I was fearing a much higher price for the big box.

I hope so (original). What is confusing is that there is reference to a Steve Wilson Stereo remix on the Blu, so one would suspect that may be used on the CD - but then again one would suspect they would state - Steve Wilson remix for the CD listing. Will wait and see!

I guess Who By Numbers will never be? Oh well.

I think about this sometimes. You may remember that when the By Numbers was released in the 1990s or whenever it was, that they included only 3 live tracks as bonus tracks. They may feel that there's not enough good studio stuff to justify a box set. I'm just speculating and maybe, hopefully, next year we'll get a By Numbers box

From a 2024 New York Times article:

In late 2020, Brian Kehew was working at the venerable Hollywood studio Sunset Sound when the owner asked him to help identify some tapes the Who had left behind. It was not an unusual request for Kehew, who has done tape transfers and mixes on hundreds of archival recording projects over the last 30 years, and serves as a tech and sometime backing musician for the band. He expected to find some overdubs or a safety copy of a master, nothing particularly important.
When he got his hands on the reels, he was shocked: The studio was sitting on all the original two-inch multitracks of the group’s 1975 album, “The Who by Numbers,” as well as previously unreleased songs from those sessions.
“I immediately contacted Pete Townshend, and we arranged to send the tapes back to England,” Kehew, a blond-haired Southern California native, said in a recent interview at his North Hollywood studio, which was lined with rare, vintage and obsolete tape machines. “The band had been looking for the tapes for years, but this was one place they hadn’t thought to check.”

Wow! Who By Numbers was the first album I bought new by The Who in 1975 when I was 15 so its very special to me, a deluxe box is always welcome!
