yahoo is getting worse, much worse.

now they have windows pop up saying to turn off your ad-blocker and it will not go away, and it stops you from reading a story.

also, after a few seconds or so, not immediately, loud, very loud ads begin to play and they are not easy to find to turn off.

and i used to use yahoo all the time.

the sad demise of a once wonderful and useful website.

I had my ad blocker set to mild to, you know, allow some ads to help whatever site I'm on. I recently turned it on to aggressive just because of the shit you're talking about. Give 'em an inch.....

It isn't just Yahoo.

At this time I only use Yahoo for its email address. I've had a Yahoo account since the beginning.

Their desperate for ad revenue. Verizon seems they want out of the deal or a much lower purchase price. This is going to be a trend more and more with other services and portals as users use more and more ad blockers so they do not be overrun by ads for free content, well nothing good is free people.

I have a subscription to the St. Paul Pioneer Press paper. I pay $8.00 a month for it. Without an ad blocker, I would still get ads. Go figure. But then again, I guess one pays for the print version and still put up with ads. But then again, paper ads don't fuck up my computer. :giggle:

Nah, that bid expired about a decade ago. CEO Jerry Yang didn't bite way back when. Now Verizon has it own issues and doesn't want to pay for the initial bid proposal

If the ads weren't so intrusive and obstructive, people wouldn't feel the need to use ad blockers. Auto-play videos, pop-ups, pop-unders, animated banners - it all takes away from the user experience. It adds to the bandwidth needed to view a simple text article, it eats into your data cap, it makes everything take longer. And that doesn't even get into the malware risk.

Yahoo has become essentially unusable for me, not so much because of the ads, but because their "news" site is a series of blog links, click bait, and links to Yahoo pages that link to the real article.

You are so correct Alan. Mark Zuckerberg seems to be very aware of this, will see if he can protect the user experience of Facebook users.

I have to. Otherwise, I couldn't read it. Paywall. But the Pioneer Press is a decent paper. I wouldn't waste my money on the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. That's one biased newspaper.

You are lucky to have two, St. Pete Times became Tampa Times and Tampa Tribune went under. So now just one.

NY has a few papers but they are all worthless now, even the Gray Lady felt the need to actually apologize this past week for being so way off base. Sad, very sad.

We only have 1 "real" paper left also (Seattle Times) Tacoma had a paper, but they fired all their good writers (many of whom now work for the Seattle paper), & averages about 15 pages on non advertising content for around $150 a year. No thanks. The Seattle paper also charges a significant amount to read there web site, which I will not pay.

The American papers should learn from their European counterparts. Even with the Internet, papers still thrive in the EU. They do not require advertisement as their biggest revenue generator but subscriptions.
Seems to work.

The subscriptions for the Times aren't that bad. Less than a dollar a day (I think we pay $80 for 3 months) and it includes digital access. They also have weekend only subscriptions and you still get online access for the whole week.

It wasn't that long ago that The Trib was $100 a year for print & on line & that was before they shrunk the paper

i live in a somewhat economically depressed area (lots of old steel jobs long gone) and we still have 2 local daily newspapers.....i truly do not know how they both stay open. neither one them is ever more than 20 total pages and the product is so cheaply made that as soon as you open a page the edges begin to curl up.

That's how they stay open. I used to work in a printing plant (major magazines). We had a new contract with the NEA teachers union magazine. The customer made the bid to use a particular type of paper. To make a long story short, the paper was so cheap that we spent half of a shift re-webbing the press. The paper would break during the run.... and that's catastrophic to the uninitiated. It takes time to re-web. The run took a week to do because it was such a huge order and because of the web breaks.

Anyway, they save costs that way and the printer loses.

Back to the ot... I got my first Yahoo pop up last night. I have been seeing adds that pretend to be legit news stories for a year or so.
