Gene Simmons's long-promised box set of previously unreleased solo material, which has apparently had several different working titles over the years — including "Monster" (later used by KISS for the band's most recent studio album), "Alter Ego" and "100" — will finally see the light of day later this year.
In a newly released video message, the KISS bassist/vocalist states: "For the past three years, I've been working on something that I've wanted to share with you my entire life. I've gone through hours and hours of music I've recorded and written over the past fifty years to craft my career-spanning solo recordings box set. It's called 'The Vault'."
He continues: "'The Vault' is one hundred and fifty-plus never-before-released songs I've written, spanning fifty years, going all the way back to when I was fourteen years old, all the way to some of the songs that became KISS classics. Tens CDs right here, all inside 'The Vault'. It's finally ready to bring to you. Yeah, that's right, I said 'to bring to you,' because what I'm gonna be doing is something that's never been done before by any artist or band. I'm gonna hand-deliver 'The Vault' box set to you and to fans like you around the world."
Simmons adds: "I also wanted you to have really cool stuff: an exclusive Gene Simmons action figure, an 'In Gene We Trust' medallion, a beautiful full-color book packed with photos from my peronsal archives, and my stories behind the songs — and a very special surprise item from me to you. You're not gonna believe the things we found."
The web site is not active yet, and no pricing has been announced, but I'm guessing "pricey". The real gem of this collection may be the Van Halen demos from the Love Gun era.

I was in before I saw the size of the thing (if it really does come in that safe-like package) and that he was going to hand-deliver them. If he's actually going to do that (which I find hard to believe), that means there must be a very limited edition version (maybe 25 of them?) and it will be extremely expensive ($7500+?). If so I'm really surprised that Gene would do something like that as many of the Kiss big-priced sets have not been huge sellers (Kissteria box still easily available which to me was is a surprise at the less than $2000 price tag considering everything about it was done first-rate).
Hopefully there will be a "normal" version of this that has the 10 CDs and maybe some of the extras. I'd probably go up to $300 as the audio would actually be a lot of the stuff that's right up my alley (studio versions of unreleased songs), but that would probably be about my limit.

Gene is listening to comments like this as we speak, to get a better sense of how badly he can drain the fans of all of their cash.

I see Gene has a new book coming out in November. I guess that's how he will handle the delivery of this. Probably got the publisher to foot the bill for a book/signing tour, and when he's done with the 4 hour signing window in each city he'll probably head to a hotel where they'll have a conference room rented where he can do a meet and greet and do the "hand-delivery." Sounds neat but have to think a meet and greet with Gene has to go for about $500 and the box is probably another $500...don't see a price tag on this thing less than $1000 which is too bad because I'd like to have it.

I figured the Vault package would be a bit cheaper because the Kiss meet and greets run at $1250 and come with a concert ticket and I'd guess they include a package of junk with it (t-shirt, poster, laminate). But apparently Gene thinks he's worth that on his own. Actually I think if the Vault Experience package was $1000 it would be a reasonable price. $500 for the meet and greet part and $500 for what will probably be a pretty elaborate package isn't a ridiculous price IMO. And it looks like the meet and greet will be for two whereas the Kiss meet and greet + concert ticket would only be for one. Just too rich for my blood as I'm not into the meet and greet thing at all.
If Gene ends up putting out a budget version with downgraded but still decent packaging for $300 or under then I am still interested. Or if he goes really bare bones with the packaging then I would still be interested at $200 or less. If these don't happen then I can live without it. Considering they are all demos it's a basic guarantee that 75% of what is included wont be very good.

Gene was on with Mancow this morning. He said he had written some songs with Bob Dylan and that they'll be on here. About three of them. He didn't sound like he was joking.

There is a co-write with Dylan on Simmons' Asshole album (Waiting For the Morning Light). The original demo for that song was called "Laughing When I Want To Cry." I was unaware that there was more than one song co-written with Dylan.
