I don't have one of the higher post counts here but I think some of you may be familiar with my name and the fact that I am a professional illustrator/cartoonist. Here's what's up...due to some unfortunate and unexpected personal circumstances I need to generate some revenue to offset my financial liabilities...not looking for sympathy but I AM looking for work. I know many of you are fans of original art and some have expressed interest in my own work in the past. I am offering my illustrative services to Forum participants at a significant discount from my normal pro rates. I may not be a collectible "big-name" artist but I will give you a good drawing for your money.

For those unfamiliar with my work, there is another thread on the Drawing Board featuring some examples...there's also this one, a Batgirl for our own Linda that she was pleased with...

Contact me through IMWAN or at btx109@aol.com for more information and details. We'll discuss your ideas, settle on a rate and get the process moving. Your contributions are very much appreciated and needed. Thanks in advance for your time and attention.

Glenn, you ought to check the Digital Webbing and Deviant Art forums. There are lots of people that pay for commissions - as long as you go with people that have good reps, you shouldn't get screwed.

Plus, there's also eBay.

That's a tough nut, Glenn - most of those guys (even established) won't pre-pay even a deposit for artwork. Since you don't have a reputation over there, they're worried about getting screwed. If you stick with the guys with high post counts and published work, etc, then you might not get paid any ahead of time but still come out ahead in the end.

One of the reasons I generally don't do smaller gigs or spec jobs, Steve. I've never been burned on any paid assignment I've taken and have no intention of starting now. I generally make things comfortable enough for a client that no one walks away feeling bad. Open and regular communication are key.

I think I can safely say that both Linda and Ian can vouch for me (Ian's my collaborator on a children's book I am currently illustrating). Larry Welch and Ben Prenevost, too.

I agree totally here at IMWAN - but all I'm sayin' is that elsewhere is a different story. :D

Your work is solid enough that you might even try sending in some submissions to the big boys. Do you only want commission work or would you do, say, covers or a limited series?

Are you able to make it to San Diego and try the DC talent search? Worth a shot, right? :)

Good luck!

Steve's right, Glenn. You should do that - you're better than just good.

I appreciate that, guys, but understand a couple of things:

1) I've worked professionally in comics, storyboarding and illustration since '92 and am very familiar with the whole breaking-in process of the big companies;

2) My goal with this post was to follow up with several people here in this community who have expressed interest in commissions. It's far easier and quicker to do a Dr. Strange for Gerry, for example, than six to eight pages of continuity for a major publisher, play the submission/convention game and hope for the phone to ring sometime after August.

3) Seeking gainful employment in comics, especially in today's climate, is like using the lottery as a means of earning a stable living. That's a long-term goal requiring a lot of work, networking, connections, luck, etc. I'm just trying to plug a hole with a few relatively quick illustrations that won't have wonky anatomy or poorly drawn feet...

But again, thanks for the suggestions. That's just a different goal than what I'm seeking here.

I would definitely be interested in a commission.

Maybe of characters I designed? From my youth.

Wouldn't be a problem at all, Allen. That illustration would have a lot of personal meaning behind it. Let's talk about it!

BTW...I'm working on a commission for an IMWAN member...look for me to post some in-progress work from it, oh, next week...maybe...;)

What do you charge? Do you do color? Extra Large Size?
