This is from an interview this month with a local paper where Yes were playing.
If ever there was a rock band with the credentials to play as highbrow a venue as the amphitheater at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, it's Yes.
The premier art rock band of the often musically overwrought "progressive" '70s, Yes has always been made up of some of the most accomplished musicians in the genre, outlasting such contemporaries as Emerson, Lake and Palmer and the original versions of King Crimson and Genesis with songs of classically influenced complexity and beauty that are still crowd-pleasers.
Sadly, Jon Anderson, the distinctive multi-octave voice of the band, had to drop out of the lineup permanently in 2004 due to respiratory problems, and flamboyant Rick Wakeman, prog-rock's king of the cathedral-size keyboard flourishes, has gone off to become a British TV personality.
But through all the comings and goings over the years (drummer Bill Bruford, guitarists Peter Banks, Trevor Rabin and Billy Sherwood, keyboardists Tony Kaye, Patrick Moraz and Geoffrey Downes, and singer Trevor Horn), the one constant in the mix has been bassist/vocalist Chris Squire, who founded the band with Anderson in Birmingham, England, in 1968.
"That's more by default than design," Squire said of his uninterrupted membership in Yes.
He was speaking from a Washington, D.C., hotel room last week, the morning after a Yes performance at — where else — Wolf Trap.
On Tuesday, Yes will play the Lucky Star Casino in Concho, which illustrates the variety of venues the "wondrously storied" band can fit right into.
"At the moment, this current lineup is playing real well, and the current tour that we're on with Peter Frampton opening for us is going extremely well," Squire said. "I mean, we played last night here to about 7 or 8,000 people at the show in Washington, so people are liking the ticket a lot."
But Squire is quick to reassure that the current version of Yes — including longtime members Steve Howe on guitar and Alan White on drums, along with Oliver Wakeman (son of Rick Wakeman) on keyboards and Benoit David on vocals — is not through writing new music, even though the band hasn't released an album of new material since 2001's "Magnification."
"In fact, we're planning to go into the studio Oct. 4 this year to do a new album of material," he said. "But of course that's going to be with Oliver Wakeman and Benoit."
Squire said Anderson's health has improved, and he still does the occasional acoustic show, but he's no longer up to the rigors of a full-time band.
Rick Wakeman, meanwhile, has become quite the star on the "telly."
"He has a whole different career that not too many people in the U.S. know about," Squire said. "He hosts TV shows, and he has a comedy show that runs quite regularly on TV over there called 'Grumpy Old Men.' Rick, I think, divides his time these days between being a comedian and half the time being a musician. He has his own band, and they do shows, and he has this whole TV career, after dinner speeches, et cetera. So he's a busy guy."
Bringing Wakeman's son into the fold was easy enough, but replacing the seemingly inimitable Anderson on vocals seemed a more daunting task — until a friend turned Squire on to a Yes tribute band from Canada called Close to the Edge.
"I looked at it and not only was Benoit sounding exactly like Jon, but the rest of the guys in that band, there was a version of me and a version of Steve Howe, and it was like incredible, actually," Squire said.
While fans will have to wait until 2011 for the next new Yes album, Squire has just released an expanded CD/DVD version of his only solo album, 1975's well-reviewed "Fish Out of Water," and he's completed a collaboration with former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett, called "Squackett," which should be released within the next three months.
Squire said he's never been able to complete another solo album because all of the material he's written has been diverted to Yes or side projects with other musicians.
"I was really determined to do a follow-up to 'Fish Out of Water' the last two or three years," Squire said. "And I put all this material together, and then I met Steve, and we ended up collaborating. A lot of the music that was going to be on the solo album is now on this collaboration with Steve Hackett."
But it will undoubtedly be the closest thing to new Yes music the fans have heard in 10 years, which is a good thing.

Good article, but Jon did not "drop out of the lineup" in 2004. He was sidelined by a respiratory attack in 2008 and the band decided to continue without him.

They can call it Yes and the are. One of the best Yes albums was without Anderson and that was Drama. Let's hear the music first and then judge the album. I do 100% understand anyone being upset, even I'm not happy with it. But, it is what it is and if the album is good, I'll get it. Also, let's face facts-aside from The Ladder, the last few albums with Anderson all bombed (as did The Ladder, but I think it was a good effort) and were less than stellar.

I'm inclined to agree with IP here, however, I'd love to see them tour as "Fuck No!" That would be a hoot! "Hell No!" would also work.

I'm a huge fan of "The Ladder" as well as the one before it, "Open Your Eyes." Everything since, for me, has been pretty boring.
I'm just not sold on the new singer. We'll see when this one comes out though. For my money, Yes is still Yes, even without Anderson – that doesn't mean it's any good though. "Drama" was a phenomenal album. It didn't hurt that Anderson was replaced by one of the most talented people to ever be involved with rock music.
For me. Yes isn't Yes without Squire. He's been the only constant through the years and he's the backbone of the group. ABWH was good, but it lacked what Squire brings to the table. Conversely, you have albums without the core four like "Talk" and "Drama," which may or may not be great albums, but they're still very much Yes.

I'm with ya here except for Open Your Eyes which is OK, but not very memorable. Not as bad as fans would have you believe though. I agree that without Squire it's not the same. ABWH was OK but it was missing Squire badly. Talk and Drama are two of my favorite Yes albums and I'd hope they go in that realm here. They can do whatever they want-no record company pressure at this point you'd think. They can certainly do a good album without Anderson and have already done so. I also agree about David. He's a good singer for sure, but he does not hit the notes that Anderson does and he's a little watery for my tastes. But he is servicable-whether he can write or sound better in the studio is what matters to me. My guess is the music will be chiefly written by Squire and Howe. There are rumours Rabin may help out and his appearance with the band last week makes that seem possible.

When I discovered Yes, their new album was Drama, although that was not the first Yes album I bought. I love it too. It's certainly better than Tormato.
I was up in arms over the replacement of Jon, but what's done is done. I'll get the new album and try and give it a fair hearing.
As for me, Open Your Eyes was a disappointment. A couple of good tracks, but... The fact that it was a Squire/Sherwood project that got shanghaied into becoming a Yes album explains a lot.
I think the Anderson era ended on a high note with the return-to-form The Ladder and Magnification.

The title track of that album is one of my all-time favorite Yes songs. I love the Anderson & Squire call-and-response on the pre-chorus.
But you're right, most of the album is weak.

Guess I need to revisit Drama. Never liked it.
I hope you do, Geff. Sometimes time and distance from an album can make you appreciate it. I think it's got a great energy to it. And I think it stands on its own alongside the other albums.
Even Rick Wakeman, who opposed it originally on the grounds that Jon wasn't on it, later said "I now stand highly corrected."
I like Rick. He seems fairly open minded about Yes lineups that don't include him, unlike Steve Howe. He gave props to Trevor Rabin and said that "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" was the "Roundabout" of the '80s.

I guess I'm alone here in loving the last Yes studio album to date, Magnification. This is the one with the orchestra. I think it's got some terrific songs on it. I loved the live performances of these songs when Rick Wakeman rejoin the band.
As for Benoit David, his Jon impersonation has been great in concert (I've seen the new lineup three times). When it comes to the new album, though, I want to hear him sing as Benoit. I've got the two Mystery albums he's sung lead on and he's got the chops.
I'm a Yes Zombie, though, and will get it as soon as it comes out.

Some very, very cool info on the new album! Trevor Horn! YES!
Trevor Horn will return as a producer on the new Yes album. On October 30, 2010, Yes announced the signing of a worldwide recording deal with the Italian record label Frontiers Records.

Yes have inked a new worldwide recording deal with the Italian-based record label, Frontiers Records.
Steve Howe, Chris Squire and Alan White, along with Oliver Wakeman (Rick Wakeman's son) and new lead singer Benoit David, will enter the studio to record the group's first new CD in a decade. It is anticipated for release before Summer 2011.
"Having the two new guys in the line-up has inspired the impetus behind the need for YES to return to the studio" explains Chris Squire, while Steve Howe adds "The new lineup has shown that we can operate well as a touring band, so now to expand that to recording would broaden our repertoire and the inclusion of Oliver and Benoit on new recordings will show a new leaf in YES music's continuing development." -

For me, the weak link in the new line-up was Oliver. Or at least that's how I felt when I saw them live. His playing was serviceable at best. Guess I expected a little more given his pedigree.

I've said that before. Oliver is OK so far, and not much better-at least the times I saw him live with Yes. I'd rather Geoff Downes, Igor Khoroshev or even Tom Brislin be there, but by no means do I think Oliver is bad. He blows away most keyboardists. I just feel his sound choices and solos are a bit tepid for Yes.

I'll be curious to see if having David and Wakeman Jr. will spark some new creativity in the studio. Seems like they're going retro with Trevor Horn as producer, but if the songs are good and the playing is good, then I'll listen to the new Yes with an open mind.
