Probably my least favorite of the 80's output, but I'll get it anyway (2-disc version).
I distinctly remember being disappointed when I bought the original release. I knew Sykes was gone, but figured this would be a good release anyway. Steve Vai is a great guitarist, but his work here doesn't fit with Whitesnake.
I said it before and I'll say it again........ Coverdale really blew it by getting rid of Sykes. John's a HUGE part of the 1987 album. His playing and song writing is the essence of it 100%.

True, but Sykes sealed his fate when he suggested bringing in another vocalist when Coverdale had vocal problems during th e1987 sessions. I think they had great creative chemistry but did not get along due to egos. Too bad, it would have been interesting to see what this album would have been like had Sykes been on board. This was a disappointment, I agree and the Blue Murder album was better than SOTT IMO.

And yeah, Vai is (and was) a monster, but was totally out of place in Whitesnake.
I own both Blue Murder albums. They're epic. The second one needs a remaster. It was unlike the first one somewhat but also very good.
Personally, I consider Blue Murder to be a one album band. The second one came out a few years later and it wasn't even the same band, except for Sykes.
I have heard that the second album came out as Blue Murder to satisfy a contractual obligation to Geffen records.
I wish the original band had continue on after such a promising debut.

The set also includes the CD debut of Slip of the Tongue: The Wagging Tongue Edition. Released exclusively on vinyl in 1989, it features Coverdale being interviewed about each track followed by the song.
I guess there's something to be said for completeness, but I have trouble believing this truly warrants an entire disc, especially with all the duplication of songs.

And truthfully, if it's just him talking, it doesn't even need full resolution, and could fit on the end of another disc.

Yeah, that Blue Murder album is fantastic and BIG sounding.
The second album is basically a Sykes solo record and quite forgettable.
It's still most of the original lineup though, as it's Sykes, Appice (on 9 of the songs) and Nik Green on keyboards who was on the first album and tour. The only guy missing is Franklin, although that was a huge loss. And if I recall, Franklin may be on a track or two, but I'm not sure.

I'm pretty shocked that this album merited a super-deluxe version, because the album just isn't very good. And it may have been a big initial seller in the USA, but that was probably because it came on the heels of a mega-seller. The album didn't seem to be that well received. I'm really surprised Rhino would release a big set like this, and won't even give a 2 CD release for the first Skid Row album which to me would seem like a much better bet. Perhaps this is aimed more towards the European market?
I don't like this album, but if Vandenberg is all over the demos, then I might get it because I am a big fan of Vandenberg's early work.
Wow, I had initially glanced through the track list and then went back and looked at it again. There is a version of Burning Heart on this. That probably guarantees that I will at least get the 2 CD version.
The Slide It In box got pushed down my list of box sets to get (...And Justice For All, Toto, Def Leppard), but that's the next box set on my list and is a virtual lock to be ordered in my next batch of purchases.

For the record, the songs I REALLY like from this release happen to be the ballads/power ballads........
Now You're Gone, The Deeper The Love, and Sailing Ships.
Fool For Your Loving on Slip just blows. Nothing beats the original version (from 1980's Ready an' Willing) which was the version that hooked me onto Whitesnake to begin with.

As for this colossal Deluxe Edition of Slip of the Tongue...pass.
I didn't bother with the Whitesnake Deluxe either.
It all stopped being Whitesnake for me with these albums and the 2 CD remasters I have from a few years ago are good enough and I never play them.
Just the opposite for me. Slide It In and the 1987 album are my Whitesnake, as I became aware of them during that time.
Classic 80s metal with the great duo of Coverdale and Sykes. Too bad those two didn't continue beyond 1987.
When I was about 10-11 years old I bought the cassette of Ready 'N Willing and I was hooked.
That album, Live In The Heart Of The City and Come N' Get It are the hallmark Whitesnake albums to me.
When Slide It In came out, I was still on board because there were some Blues elements there, but Whitesnake and Slip Of The Tongue lost me much like Def Leppard did with Hysteria.
I never came back.
I know they didn't care about me though!

I forgot where I read it, but it finally came out that the story about Adrian Vandenberg "injuring his hand while he did some piano exercises" was a bunch of BS. Apparently, he was good enough to write the songs, but was not deemed worthy to play on the actual album. I wish I could remember how the story exactly went. Maybe someone at Geffen wanted more of a "hotshot" guitarist and thought Vai would more of a guitar star?
Steve Vai is great, but he's not really a good fit for Whitesnake in 1989, IMO.

Complete stupidity if true. Vandenberg was an awesome player.
All Whitesnake from the Snakebite EP through the 1987 album is all top-shelf stuff. My favorite is the UK version of Slide It In.
Just getting more and more excited about Burning Heart making an appearance in this set. Those first three Vandenberg records were packed with great songs, but that one was a real stand-out. Probably a really good chance that Vandenberg is all over these demos, which would make the box worth purchasing.

I was hoping there would be some unreleased live material on here instead of the 1990 Donington show, which was put out as a standalone release a few years back.

Reading another press release and had overlooked that they changed the running order of the songs. I looked up the original UK release and it has the same running order as the original US release. Then looked up some of the recent reissues and all the ones that I checked also have the original song order. Does anybody know if they've used this particular song order prior to this release? It seems kind of odd that Now You're Gone and The Deeper the Love got placed back-to-back. Kittens Got Claws seems like it's in an odd spot at #2, as I don't remember being very fond of that one. Always thought Judgement Day was a good song and was too late, so seeing that bumped to #6 seems like a better choice. No real surprise that Fool For Your Loving got bumped to the end as it was a self-cover and the result was very mediocre compared to the original.
I'm looking at CD3, and if re-arranging the song order, that one seems better to me. Just take that running order and flip songs 6 and 8 (put Wings of the Storm at #6 and Kittens Got Claws at #8) and that's probably how I would arrange the song order if starting from scratch (as I sometimes do on my ipod).
Ultimately though, I think Coverdale probably should have just kept the original running order. Rearranging the song order almost had to be done with the 1987 album, considering there were different versions in different territories. But I don't think they should have done it with Slide It In (especially since that one is a classic), and maybe it would have been best to keep the original order here. Always room to play with the running order on the bonus discs.

This is just a colossal collection of monitor mixes, remixes, live material that everyone already has, interviews, unfinished ideas and demos.
I could never listen to any of this, nor would I want to.
The only two things of interest to me are the Vandenberg and Public Image Ltd covers (Vai was in PiL for a while) and those are most likely just loose jams or half-assed demos.
A giant pass for me.

I'd have to look it up, but I believe it was producer Keith Olsen who said this.
