Cool, this is a classic! I just re-watched it a couple of months back. Did you know they used the same sets and filmed it concurrently with MY favorite film (at least of the era), King Kong? From what I have read about this colorization, Ray Harryhausen has endorsed it highly and is very excited about coloring his own earlier work. 20,000,000 miles to Earth was the first. I haven't picked up the color edition yet so I don't know firsthand how it looks.

Do you know if they restored any of the censored scenes? I'm not even sure the footage still exists, and it doesn't say on the site. Be sure to let us know what you think of the end result (both colorized and the restored b&w)!

I've only seen the standard old one disk version. I kept holding out buying it because the video quality is really awful, and I was hoping it would eventually get done up right. It looks as if that may finally have come to pass.

I've never seen any of the movies, but I have read the story. It's kind of an archetype, in a way. Traditionally any time a series writer (TV or comics) got stuck for an idea, they fell back on either the "Most Dangerous Game" plot or the "Prince and the Pauper" (i.e., character turns out to have a double) plot. I don't know how many "Most Dangerous Game" type stories I've seen!
The most embarrassing example of overuse of one of these plots was in the 1970s when the short-lived TV sci-fi series "Gemini Man" was put into series production and they apparently had neglected to have any scripts ready. One of the writers was told by his producer to rework a previous season's "Bionic Woman" double script. So "Gemini Man's" first regular episode after the pilot was a hackneyed evil double story.
That was bad enough for a new series that should have been impressing viewers with how fresh and original it could be. But that season something happened to Lindsay Wagner, so "Bionic Woman" had to go into reruns. They re-ran their evil twin story the evening before "Gemini Man's" thinly reworked version aired. Since sci-fi shows were pretty rare then the same audience watched both shows and threw a fit. They felt the networks had insulted their intelligence by giving them the same plot twice in one week. "Gemini Man" was gone within a couple of months.

I may check this out. Gerry, I don't know if you were aware, but this story made it into some of the commonly used literature texts used in Amercian junior high schools (ages approx. 12-14). So a lot of people have read this story, but the movie is not as well remembered.

The original story is a great anthology piece--short, fast-moving, and exciting. They probably put it in those textbooks to entice boys to read. A little something to stand out from among all those Willa Cather and F. Scott Fitzgerald selections.

Yes, and plus, as you suggest in your earlier post, it contains some very archetypical story elements. I think it is used to illustrate things like foreshadowing (certain elements are revealed that you know will have later significance) and irony (which is a difficult concept to define for young people, but is probably present when the hunter becomes the hunted).

I've never seen the movie, but I certainly remember the story from my middle school literature textbook. I'm pretty sure it's still a staple in the textbooks currently used in Illinois.

it arrived this morning.Bit of a curates egg.Colouring much better than previous attempts to colour old movies. Some scenes look terrific, flesh tones everything look great.Theres a few bits at the start where colours seem to ghost, mainly white.Strange experience to see this in colour, but all in all a very good effort at colouring. ill be watching the restored version tomorrow.

Read the story in a textbook as well.
