Come on Kurt - write that story - then we can have the power company back again!

Ummm.... That'd be Power Company published by DC and written by IMWAN's own Kurt Busiek!

Oh!

I am ashamed to have not been able to identify them...

Y'know, like I told him when he joined here, Kurt Busiek
is the only writer I can say that've I've never read anything
of his that I haven't at least liked (the majority of his
stuff I've loved). Obviously, there's plenty of his older
work that I might not be familiar with, although I have
a bunch of stuff he wrote before he became "THE" Kurt Busiek
& liked it all (y'all should check out his VELOCITY miniseries
for Top Cow, & JACK KIRBY'S TEENAGENTS from Topps),
but of his "Big Two" stuff, POWER COMPANY is one of the
series I just never picked up, for whatever reason. I also
never read THUNDERBOLTS, or SUPERMAN: SECRET
IDENTITY, although I'll probably get the trade of that one.

I've also never read something called
SPIDER-MAN/X-FACTOR, which I guess was either a
miniseries or a one-shot. I'd never heard of it, but
Kurt Busiek himself told me not to read it, which I take it
means it's one of his least favorite of his own work.

So, of course, I'm now extra tempted to track it down & get it...

I got every issue of Power Company.

Sadly, it just never grabbed me, I'm not entirely sure why.
I guess the characters just didn't engage me enough?

It would be incorrect (and unfair) to say they were all written with the same voice, but to me they were written with voices too similar to each other. They all seemed like nice enough characters but just not that little extra bit of pizzazz, I guess.

Conceptually I thought the idea was brilliant, which is why I stuck with the entire (as it turns out) run, and bought all the guest-star crossover launches (GL, WW etc) and I was sad to see it cancelled. I'd hoped they'd find their place (I'm sure KDB did too!)

Also glad to see an openly gay character of which entirely nothing was said. No mention of it, no reference, as if it were entirely mundane (Big brownie points from me on that, no surprise!)

Dunno, I guess they were 'almost but not quite' there, if that makes any sense.

Mel - I liked that too. Not the general - let's set some fireworks off - it's a gay person!

Yeah - plus, he wasn't any sort of cliche - not trawling the bars at night, not effeminate, just a man, a real man, who could be decisive and powerful, but who just happened to be gay, if you paid attention.

Very nice work, that one. Kudos Mr Busiek.

J.R. do yourself a favour and pick up Superman: secret Identity. I found it to be a very well written, upbeat story. It flows along wonderfully and the art by Stuart Immonen is beautiful. Very highly recommended!

Trevor, yep! The Haunted Tank appeared in the last PowCo storyline, and Manhunter was a member throughout the series. This Manhunter was the only clone who survived, apparently because he wasn't "programmed" as thoroughly as the others. He wore a black version of Paul Kirk's costume. When I heard there was going to be a new MANHUNTER series, I hoped it was going to be about him. Alas, such was not to be....
