Fans should be alerted to the rather frustrating news that the version at Barnes & Noble has an exclusive bonus track, "All the Sad Songs." This will indeed be frustrating for anyone that bought it anywhere else, and her own website makes no mention of this. But...it gets worse: the iTunes version has — you guessed it — a different "exclusive" bonus track, "This Is Home." And, of course, it is the only track you can't purchase separately.
So, if you're a diehard 'have-to-have-it-all' fan, you'll have to buy the full album twice in two formats. Or, if you already bought it somewhere besides B&N or iTunes, you'll wind up buying it THREE times...
I will refrain from making any commentary on this except to say that these types of marketing schemes are directly aimed at the most dedicated of an artist's fans who they know will want every song. I like a physical product in full CD fidelity with artwork, lyrics and credits without having to read them on-line or print them out and assemble my own booklet at home; others prefer the convenience of downloads. That's fine, but no one should miss out on a track because they prefer one format over the other. Bravo to the artists who release the same complete album in every format and let the fan decide what they want to purchase...and boo to the labels, management and, yes, the artists who approve these plans, who calculate that the faithful fan base will re-buy the album if they stick an extra song here, and an extra song there...
