Been really busy, had a bit of a go at Druss from David Gemmels' Drenai series. Not that happy with it, but at least it's finished!

Hey, I've seen several depictions of Druss and that's among the best I've seen.

I greatly miss poor David Gemmell.

Great work as always... hey was a zombie trying to cop a feel in the top one? Love the shelf, hard to do convincing glass with pencil. Great depth of field in the bottom one.

Thought I'd try and be a bit more dynamic:

He's mainly a conceptual artist for Hollywood these days, but I know his work from an old RPG called Skyrealms of Jorune, where I was first absolutely blown away by his pencil work.

Worth a look, but be prepared to be depressed :)

Good Gawd, the concept art of Blackbeard as Bardem, Ian McShane and Del Toro is stunningly awesome.

Thought I should post my entry for the NuDC thread here too, now with slightly shoddy lettering:

Nice! Curious -- how long do you spend on something like that?

Thanks Don! I'd love to see it - always a blast and flattering when someone takes an interest! Feel free to play with any images on this thread that take your fancy, I'm not Byrne-like about my stuff :)

I haven't had the chance to draw much in the last month - Recently moved in with my girlfriend, who then lost her job, so I've been fretting over money, moving, dealing with the whole DC52 thing, doing my tax returns/year end paperwork (I'm a retailer in my "real" life) getting ready for Christmas and generally running round like Beaker from the Muppets :)

Hopefully the madness will let off a little in the new year!

Ya, that Nu52 is fucking up a lot of folks...

And I meant to type "I dig..." not " I did..." . I'm not quite up to doing something that detailed just yet.

I wouldn't worry about the "detail", Don. It's actually one of the easier parts of drawing -- I'd say to really focus on proportions and composition in a drawing, making sure everything looks right without any rendering or textures. If it looks good even without that stuff, then start adding in the rendering you want.

Think about -- why does Byrne's current work suck? He's pouring just as much hatching, textures, linework, etc. as he ever has into it... but when characters have gigantic heads and weirdly formed limbs, there's just no amount of "detail" that will save the art.

It's been a while, but here's a couple of bits to finish off 2011. First, a Kirby-ish idea. I was trying to create a dark Kirby machinery vibe with a bit of a Gulacy feel:

and finally, a penciled piece more in my usual style:

Couldn't get as good a scan as I'd like with this one - I think my pencils were too light. Might have to actually ink it:

To quote my girlfriend - "I'm so glad I'm not in your head"
