Just scribbles and doodling, but it is the first time I've picked up a pencil in a while.

My brother and I have been playing around the Mutants and Masterminds game in the last couple of days. This is my character, Bubo Strix who has owl powers. I figure he’s not human, so he doesn’t need a secret identity. Bubo means “horned owl” and Strix is a mythical owl of ill omen.

This is my first attempt at drawing him. Not a good drawing, and probably not the permanent design, but I thought I’d lost more than I apparently have. At this stage of the game, I’ll take it.

The stuff that looks like butterfly wing decoration is supposed to be cosmic energy ala Jack Kirby, but I flubbed it. I also forgot the "r” in Strix... oh well. I’ll fix it later, maybe.

Looks cool, Trevor. Try more of the "Kirby Krackles" look in the wings.

Thanks Marcus. I wish I'd learned foreshortening somewhere along the way. Everything I draw looks really two dimensional.

So much cross-hatching... :(

I was told be Andre LeBlanc, Will Eisner's co instructor, to keep the drawing simple and don't really cross hatch to much. Especially, if the drawing was small. I didn't cross hatch for about a year after that. I just used solid blacks. Even, now I try to use it to make the object more 3D or to emphasize muscles.

Makes sense. I'll try that on the next one. Thanks Marcus.

I love Gerhard's cross-hatched backgrounds in Cerebus. Beautiful textures. I really like that style.

Maybe this isn't the right way to do it, but I don't add any rendering lines until after I've already drawn the figures and major shapes of the drawing.

I've seen a recommended process go -- contour lines, then spot blacks and then rendering lines.

That's a good idea.
