I wonder if adding a number "4" to the title is a mistake because there are people who will go expecting to see a Woody and Buzz story. For example, I don't think Halloween III: Season of the Witch is that bad a film, but despite John Carpenter's intent to make a franchise centered around the holiday rather than a character, most fans expected to see Michael Myers and thus were disappointed in the film. As a result, all of the subsequent Halloween films and remakes were about Michael Myers.
If this is going to work, John Lasseter and company will have to do more than just tell a great story. They're going to have to get the word out in advance that this won't be about Woody and Buzz. If it works, there will be no reason why Disney can't make "Toy Story" movies until the end of time. If it doesn't, it will wind up on the DVD shelf next to Halloween III.

I skimmed through the first paragraph and read the part about this not being a continuation of the same story, but missed the part about Tom Hanks and Tim Allen reprising their roles. That changes everything. Next time, I should really consider reading something more carefully before posting.
Then again, if I did, IMWAN wouldn't be nearly as interesting...
...just as Marv was killed in the first movie Sin City so they could not use him in a story set AFTER the events of that movie, the second movie used him in a story that was set before. I haven't seen Toy Story 3, but I think Toy Story 4 will be set sometime before the events of TS3 and will make no reference to them.
except that hopefully more IMWANkers will actually like it.
Disney and Pixar's chief creative officer and Toy Story director John Lasseter said that Pixar Animation Studios is moving forward with Toy Story 4, which he will direct from a script by Will McCormick and Rashida Jones.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Toy Story’s release--which was Pixar's first feature and the first computer animated theatrical release--and Lasseter noted on Friday at D23 that the wheels started to turn after director and screenwriter Andrew Stanton quietly wrote an “unbelievable treatment.”
“It is a love story between Woody and Bo Peep,” Lasseter said, noting that Woody and Buzz set out to find Bo. “It’s a very personal story for me, inspired by my wife, Nancy.”
Oscar winning songwriter and composer Randy Newman will be back for the film, and he joined Lasseter on stage, sitting at a piano to sing Toy Story classic “You’ve got a Friend in Me.”
The fourth instalment in the animated franchise was originally due in summer 2017, but now the US release date has been delayed until June 15, 2018. It will be released in UK cinemas on July 13, 2018.

Ironically he lost so many Oscars for Best Original Score to Disney animated features. (Back in the day when that was the ONLY Oscar that feature cartoons were allowed to win.) How to get around that? He finally got a job---and won an Oscar---for scoring a Disney/Pixar animated feature.
I hope they replace the title. I think 4 is the time to drop the number system, and just go with Toy Story: ________. Give a subtitle, and think of the series as just ongoing.
