Description
Between 1970 and 1976, James Taylor released six albums with Warner Bros. Records that became the foundation for his unparalleled career that includes five Grammy® Awards, induction into the Songwriters and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, and more than 100 million records sold worldwide.

Rhino pays tribute to Taylor with a new collection that introduces newly remastered versions of all his Warner Bros. albums. THE WARNER BROS. ALBUMS: 1970-1976 will be available on July 19 from Rhino.

Each album in the set has been remastered, a process overseen by Peter Asher, who signed Taylor to the Beatles’ Apple Records label in 1968, worked as his manager for 25 years, and originally produced several of these albums.

In the collection’s liner notes Asher writes: “Revisiting these albums several decades later has been revelatory, nostalgic, and exciting. I have heard bits and pieces frequently over the years, of course, but listening with concentration and in detail to each of the original tapes without interruption has been a thrilling luxury.”

THE WARNER BROS. ALBUMS: 1970-1976 includes: Sweet Baby James (1970), Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon (1971), One Man Dog (1972), Walking Man (1974), Gorilla (1975), and In the Pocket (1976).

The collection is filled with some of Taylor’s most iconic and beloved songs like “Sweet Baby James,” “Fire And Rain,” “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” “Walking Man,” “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” “Mexico,” “Shower The People” and Carole King’s “You’ve Got A Friend,” the later which was Taylor’s first #1 hit and earned him his first Grammy Award (Best Male Pop Vocal) in 1971.

The collection also offers up some spectacular deep cuts like his acoustic lullaby “You Can Close Your Eyes” from Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon; the 10-minute song cycle that closes One Dog Man; “Rock ’n’ Roll Music Is Now” from Walking Man, which features backing vocals by Paul and Linda McCartney; and “Don’t Be Sad ’Cause Your Sun Is Down” from In the Pocket, a song Taylor wrote and recorded with Stevie Wonder.

Of course I'll probably get this, even though I have multiple versions of "Sweet Baby James" and "Mud Slide Slim".

I saw a comment about this box set release on another site. "Peter Asher mentioned almost two decades ago there was an alternate version of “Fire and Rain” with a choir that would show up on “a later collection” I guess we continue to wait."

I had first seen the comment Asher made about "Fire and Rain" with the gospel chorus in the booklet of the remastered James Taylor Apple album. So I wonder if Warner has the rights to the track? After seeing the comment and getting the CD I have never seen or heard a thing more about it. The bonus tracks on the Apple album included the demos for "Sunny Skies" and "Let Me Ride" which later appeared on "Sweet Baby James" and "Mud Slide Slim". I thought both of those demos were really good. I would like to hear the alternate version of "Fire and Rain", but since it has taken so long to appear, I wonder if the hold up is rights?

Maybe goodbye to some more AF titles. I bet this won't have the ****ed up credit for the producer (Martin Birch credited on one AF title).

I'm locked in at just under $24 including shipping at AmazWAN UK -- $4 a disc. I've got the AF versions except Walking Man (a pretty weak album), and they sound great, but at that price I want to hear these. I can almost justify it just for a good remaster of In the Pocket.

I have a few of the AF versions and they are great, but I don't have all of the albums and for the right price, this looks like a nice little set.

'all fall down' from 'walking man' is a very nice deep cut from taylor's catalog..

Agreed. I like the title track a lot, too. I just think it's a much weaker album overall than any of the other 5 in this set. I'll be glad to have it, though.

Had they included the two re-recordings off of his Greatest Hits album, I would jump on this immediately.

They should have added those, rare re-recordings that top the originals.Could have stuck them on the end of In The Pocket.

I may be the exception, but I think the original Carolina In My Mind is the better of the two versions. I like the buoyancy and the background vocals of the original.

I noticed the CD set on the U.S. Amazon site now says usually ships within 1 to 2 months. Glad mine is supposed to arrive today.

Could always go to the marketplace, or Oldies.com, or ImportCDs.com which all appear to have it in stock, and near Amazon's price.

Collectors who haven't ordered this box set can get it from Amazon UK, where it's in stock and (still) a bit cheaper than the USA price:

Ordered from AmazWAN UK several weeks back. U.S. equivalent about 20-25 bucks. Mine shipped Thursday. UK standard shipping usually takes about a week.
