That’s what your progression reminds me of.

Which do you like?

The Mignola one and superhero one.

Tried an experiment where I do the contour lines first, then lay down the color flats, then render from there to see if it helps me stop over-rendering stuff. I'm going from sketch to final.

And the black and white. I'm not sure if this made a difference, but whatever.

Thanks! I posted it on the Dragon fan group, so he'll see it -- but he's hard to impress and he has very particular tastes, so I'm not hopeful he'll care one way or the other.

The hard-to-impress Larsen is impressed.

Sounds like someone needs to stop being a pussy and start admitting he's a damn good artist.

You’re right. Larsen IS a damn good artist.

Savagely good, in fact.

Definitely in the top six as far as the Image founders go.

For anyone who cares, lol... just need to talk about this...

I've been toying with developing that cartoony style to speed up production and think (hope) I'm in a good place. I tried drawing a few more things in the style that I did that Adam Warlock drawing in and thought things were going well enough, but something wasn't sitting right. I then remembered that Cyborg Caveman and I want to do a fantasy comic with a darker, weirder tone in the spirit of the Appendix N.

While I like the style and feel it can work for all kinds of stuff, I don't think it would work well for a sword and sorcery title with a darker, moodier tone. But how to do something cartoony that isn't a one for one rip off of Mignola's art? I want to emulate his use of blacks but I don't want to copy everything the guy does. What cartoony style works with dark S&S? Then I remembered Ralph Bakshi's FIRE & ICE and LORD OF THE RINGS animated movies... simpler styles without any rendering, but more realistic proportions.

So I thought, what if I did something in that vein, then added the blacks? I'm pretty pleased with the results! I probably should still simplify my black areas a bit more, but I feel I'm on the right track here.

I've got the simplified animation-style line art and then the version with blacks on the top row, then on the second row I've got the flat colors, the black areas made transparent to create a "cell-shading" effect, and then that again with a watercolor layer applied. I'm pleased with all of them, hope this works out. Fingers crossed!

Hanzo-

I loved the Dungeon & Dragons Adventure comic ads in the 80s. As a fun experiment, you should do a one page story with your characters, and make it a homage, but make it for DCC.

If you are unaware of what I am talking about . . .

I remember enjoying those, too, Nagoo. I second your suggestion for Hanzo.

There was actually a web comic with that premise done a few years ago, Deepest Catacombs. You can read it all online for free now, I believe.

Ooh, nice. I especially like how they integrated their credits there to resemble the coupon that appears in the last panel.
