From my own experience, I can add that the "of food" component must be a critical component to create the wild trippiness.

Both classical and method acting have their strengths but I always found this Laurence Oliver story pretty hilarious:
"A funny story purports that, while working on Marathon Man, Dustin Hoffman (a method actor) stayed up for three full days to play a sleep-deprived character. Upon learning of this, Olivier is said to have responded, "My dear boy, why don't you just try acting?"

Part of the issue is so many actors have a different idea of "The Method."

I studied the Konstatin Stanislavki System, the root of the method, for several years with an obscure Russian genius who I thought was in his eighties but was actually in his forties due to drink. (I once drank a dixie cup from his plastic water bottle of handmade liquor and woke up the next day with a miserable hangover. A dixie cup.)

We were taught "the method" was to evoke specific "inner visions" from our past to correspond to each line, so that every word we said had an concrete emotional grounding from our own lives. There was nothing about staying in character for every moment during the run of a show, let alone spending down time being an incontinent asshole and mailing used condoms to castmates (that was something to do for a fun prank, not because I thought Solyoni would spend his free time that way before murdering Tuzenbach.). The most we inhabited characters outside of rehearsal and performances was growing beards and drinking a lot, since we were playing Russian alcoholics after all..

The whole performative assholishness aspect is really an innovation of the Hollywood star system. Looking at this wikipedia list of method actors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Method_ac ... hod_actors) gives a sense of how many actors incorporate Method without being obnoxious about it.

I literally thought to myself, "I should really wait for Doot to post" but pressed on anyway.

For our last performance of The Three Sisters, I replaced the water in our prop bottle of "vodka" with actual vodka, and we all got hammered onstage. I of course informed my cast mates but they thought I was kidding and congratulated themselves for really getting into the fucking groove off tap water.

That's probably the funniest story.

I also like the one where the actor demands a motivation and the director replies, "Your motivation is to walk from there to there. Just fucking do it," which I've heard attributed to dozens of collaborations. I think there was a variant dramatized with Coppola and Pacino in The Offer.

During his time on The Actor's Studio, Hoffman also told of going for a meal with the very ill Olivier and his wife, Joan Plowright. At the dinner he asked Olivier why they (actors) did what they do. Hoffman says that the sick actor, despite his infirmity, stood up and bent over towards him.

So Olivier liked to say "dear boy" a lot, is my takeaway.

He was the Gil Kane of acting.

Based on the little I've heard about method acting, it sounds emotionally unhealthy.

Must be tough being Natalie Portman.

Yeah, her refusal to get pregnant with twins for real ruined the Prequels.
