I did not. I learned that they did not put it out for rental, blu-ray, or streaming for free. They showed it in a 2 night Fathom release in theaters, then it became available for purchase digitally (and owned copy of the movie for $17.99).

I guess I was waiting for the right occasion to purchase it and watch it, but felt no sense of urgency -- it feels like they might be preparing to include it as an extra in some big anniversary release or something.

I watched it, rented it on Amazon. It was fine. Worth seeing once just to see what Sly did with it, but it ultimately just reinforces how sparse (and absurd) the story actually was compared to the first couple films. I certainly don't regret seeing it, but feel no need to do so again.

Incidentally, removing the robot entirely from Rocky IV also mostly trims Paulie out of the movie as well, as it turns out.

Bishop and I watched it. It was interesting as a novelty, but even with a lot better character stuff for both Apollo and Rocky, the movie still wasn't improved enough to be put into the "good" category for me. I do prefer it to the original cut, though.

Saw Creed III last night. Pretty good movie, like the previous ones, and I enjoyed it but I have to admit that 80-90% of my interest in these movies comes from their ties to the Rocky movies and characters, so reducing those connections to a couple mentions of Rocky and Apollo just kind of diminishes my investment here. But it was good and well-made, Jonathan Majors was utterly fantastic and Michael B. Jordan is a star for sure.

I did get to thinking about one thing. There's a minor story detail regarding a ticket to the Ali/Foreman "Rumble in the Jungle", which took place in 1974 (I had to look that up because I have never been a huge fan of real-life boxing and have paid it no attention since the Mike Tyson days). However, within the fictional world of the Rocky movies, Apollo Creed should have already been the champ by that point, so it becomes a fun question as to when boxing history in our world and the Rocky world began to diverge.

I haven't seen the original Rocky in a few years so I can't remember if it established just how long Apollo had been the champ, but it sure feels like he was a long-established champion who had already successfully defended the belt against numerous challengers. The climactic fight at the end of Rocky took place on New Year's Day of 1976, barely a year after the Rumble in the Jungle (October 1974), so in the Rocky universe either the RITJ was not actually for the title or else Apollo had been champ for less than a year when he fought Rocky.

I enjoyed Creed III quite a bit. They went for a different vibe, a different feel. It had emotional heft because of the performance of Majors.

Ali had first been champion in 1964. His signature feature was losing the belt, losing fights, and then coming back to take it again. So Apollo wasn't a close pastiche of Ali, just the brash hit dog part. Apollo was career undefeated, while Ali had lost to Frazier, Norton, and Vietnam at that point.

True but I still think he was supposed to evoke Ali, and Rocky was based on Chuck Wepner

No, I just meant that if the Rumble happened in our world as well as in the fictional Rocky world (as evidenced by the ticket shown in Creed III), then Apollo had to have become champion sometime after that, since Ali won back the title there.

Which means that since the title fight in Rocky happened New Year's Day of 1976, 14 months after the Rumble in the Jungle, then Apollo couldn't have been the champion for very long after all within the Rocky universe. But it also means that he would have had to beat Ali for the title.

BTW, I'm not really hung up on this. It's just kind of fun to speculate at what point real history and Rocky history diverged, kind of like with The West Wing. Who was the last person to be President in both the real world and in the show's world?

Also, I'm really not that knowledged about real-world boxing post the Tyson days, as I said above. How often do the top fighters fight, 2 times a year? 3?

I also wonder what percentage of the public knows who the current heavyweight champ is compared to during the days of the original cycle of Rocky movies. I mean, I have no idea who the current champ is.

My point is that Apollo is not a true pastiche of Ali -- Apollo is undefeated forever, and had been the champion a long time. So he did not "regain" the title in the Jungle like Ali did. He's probably more like a combo of Ali and Foreman -- never defeated, but had been the champion since about 1964 (like Ali), but the Rumble in the Jungle was a title defense for him (as it was for Foreman). But he won it. (No one had ever gone the distance with Apollo, so he was MUCH more dominant than Ali).
