Did anyone else grab one of these? I expected about half of the unreleased songs to be be completely unlistenable, as there is a reason they were unreleased in the first place. I was pleasantly surprised, lots more good-to-decent type material than I was expecting. Sure lots of the recording are rough with crappy 80's sounding drum machines, but again, overall was better than what I was expecting. And after listening to it, it seems pretty obvious that it wasn't just thrown together, but Gene and the people are Rhino put a real effort into picking out the material and putting it into a pretty good sequence for listening. I would have preferred that they would have just put the songs in chronological order, but I don't have any complaints with the final running order.

The book is nice and the song notes are excellent, and it's a bit humorous when Gene's ego goes into overdrive here and there when discussing some of these songs and his career.

Only gripe, which is significant, is that this type of packaging routinely scratches discs, and my set was no exception. 8 clean discs, 2 "mildly" scratched discs and 1 with some obvious scratches on it. They all played but now I have them in individual jewel cases (the thin type) and they will definitely not be going back in the book.

$80 was a steal for this set IMO. I figure $175 would have been a fair price for this set, and would not have felt ripped off if that was what I had paid for it.

I was curious about the one track supposedly featuring Bob Dylan, probably because I've never so much heard it described by somebody that has actually heard it.

The box set has 3 tracks co-written with Dylan and then a 15 minute excerpt of their songwriting session. The 3 tracks are not 3 different songs, but three variations of the same song. First version was Na, Na, Na, Na, titled that way because most of the lyrics had not been written. Then it became Everybody Wants Somebody. Final version was Waiting For the Morning Light, which appeared on Simmons solo album Asshole.

Dylan wrote the original chord structure during the writing session. Simmons did the vocal melodies and the lyrics. In the liner notes, Simmons said he really wanted Dylan to write the lyric, but Dylan declined.

I'm not going to link a version here, but if you are interested in hearing a version where the guitar chords are more up-front, just type in Gene Simmons Na Na Na in a search engine and it's pretty likely you will have no problem finding the audio for the original demo that appears in this boxset.
