It it the preposterousness and far-fetchedness being objected to, or is it just that the movies have become formulaic and samey, like products off of an assembly line rather than something original? And the fact that superhero movies seem to have crowded out other genres to an extent not seen since they did the same thing to the comic-book industry?
It seems like a valid complaint. Comic-book critics like Gary Groth have been making the same complaint, and no one accuses them of snobbe -- oh. Right.

Well, but still though.
Woo and Scorsese are both jealous snobs, but they do have a point. The MCU formula has gotten tired, and the DC films can't even find a winning formula. Nothing irritates like irritating people who still make a good point.

Someone pointed out in a youtube that since all the backgrounds/environments are CGI, the actors do not interact with any objects or 'things' within their scene, the space seems 'flatter' than it should. Once you start noting it, you see cannot unsee it.
One reason why the Cruise MI films seem more 'solid' to me is near everything is practical effects...(at least based on teh insane behind the scenes videos)

Just learned that high-cinema big deal auteur Scorsese had deigned to direct the 1990 Dick Tracy movie at one point, but quit the project after not receiving final cut. At least we were spared the 9 hour director's cut Marty would've foisted on his captive audience.
So much for "cinema".

Something else will replace superhero movies then they can all complain about that instead. I'm sure people have voiced similar complaints about Westerns, Musicals, Romantic Comedies, etc.
I can remember when every other movie that came out was about a serial killer, or the days when everything was some kind of 'erotic thriller'...Hollywood has been doing the same thing for decades. The craze arrives, peaks, then troughs. Then something else becomes the craze.

More and more theaters going the way of the dinosaur feels inevitable . I really hope it's not the case.

My only thought is that outside of a few outliers, the box office is down overall across all genres... and superhero movies still make up a substantial portion of that top 10-15 grossing movies list.

Yeah you keep reading about "fatigue" but apart from a very few outliers, since Covid there aren't regular billion dollar movies anymore. People grew content to wait for home release. This is certainly true for me and everyone I know. We used to go to the movies 6-7 times a year, and now it might be once or twice. I know that's not a lot to begin with, but enough people doing that is going to have impact. We weren't all seeing the same 6-7 movies.

Same, but it's kids for me. We used to see at least one movie a month, more during the big movie season. If I liked a movie, I usually saw it twice, sometimes more. I guess the problem is that younger people haven't taken the place of people like me.
And now that I have the time again, I can't muster the interest.

I think there's a whole bunch of reasons for why movies in the cinemas are declining:
- Covid breaking people's habits of going out to the movies - Cost of a trip to a movie theatre (north of $40 for a movie, popcorn, and drink, not counting travel time or lord forbid babysitter) - "Hell is other people" - not that I've run into it, but I hear movie going etiquette has fallen off - Peak TV creating a legit alternative to high quality movie production - Improvement in the technology around home theatres, and even HDTV closes the production quality gap. - the product itself. When movies were the only option, a lot of people still went to bad movies; they're not doing that anymore. - the political climate causing movies and movie production to become another front in the proxy war, irrespective of the movies "objective" quality - shorter time and better coverage between theatrical and home release. It's been more than 20 years since I saw a movie in the theatre more than once, and there were always additional reasons - move of younger generation to their phones / online social interactions mean all the young people social spaces are suffering bigly (movies, night clubs, mall hangs, etc) - fewer people in the younger generation - changing audience demographics making Hollywood movies less of a cultural touchstone for immigrant communities - the arrogance of the system poisoning the audiences good will by shovelling crap at them and telling them it's gold.
If I had been more of a movie buff when I was a child, I wonder if there would be film equivalents to bands like Dangerous Toys, Bang Tango, or Kix (or Big House, or Sven Gali to get even more obscure). Bands I really enjoyed and had a brief shining moment in time, but were forgotten by almost everyone immediately. Pick a given era in any art form, and almost everyone can give you the top 20-30 examples. But in terms of movies, if you went once a week, that still leaves 20-30 movies that were forgotten as soon as they were seen, never to be heard of again.
