And so it begins.
Woke up this morning to an email that Joe Bonamassa announced his "Spring" 2025 tour. My quotes - because it runs February thru March. Nearest show is Cleveland, but it's a Saturday, so it's easy. Problem is, tix went on sale at 10 and I saw this at 9:59, which meant pretty much no time to check w/my buddy, plus he has his health concerns, so I wasn't sure what to do. I said something to my wife and she said, "Bonamassa? I'd go - I've never seen him." Done. That meant I could buy two. It's the same place we saw Geddy Lee, and we're one row in front of where we were for that. Off to the side, but plenty leg room.

I saw a blurb today that Joe Bonamassa said in an interview that Black Country Communion will apparently tour in 2025, which is great news. For our Euro friends, that is - it's apparently only going to be a couple weeks, for the usual reason that it's so hard to line up their schedules. This is one band that I've never seen, and I'd really like to. I've seen all the members in other projects, but never as BCC.

Big one for me (and JohnG, no doubt). Steven Wilson announced a 2025 US tour today. Another trip to Rennyland for me - solo this time. Don't think my buddy would like this one as much. Yes! The Covid years screwed up one tour and then he resurrected Porcupine Tree so we haven’t seen Steven Wilson solo in quite awhile so I am in for both NY shows. He is bringing back Nick Beggs on bass and Craig Blundell on drums. Guitar will be the up and coming Randy McStine who was part of the PT tour and is a friend of many of us here in NY/NJ from PROGSTOCK.
This tour should be an audio and visual treat.

Thursday night at Scotiabank Arena for my first show of the year, and the last ever* show of Canadian Pop Punk icons Sum 41. After close to 30 years on the road, and some tense time together, the guys have decided it to bring it to a close.
The show itself was fun; Sum 41 is a band with a split personality, and it has always shown in their music. The artistic split between Deryck’s pop punk sensibilities and Dave’s love of thrash led to some great songs over the years, and a schizophrenic fan base that managed to tolerate one half of the band’s catalogue because they loved the other half so much.
And in the course of their 2:20, they put on a pretty exhaustive wrap to their career – all their hits, deep cut favourites, parts of a couple of covers, and all in all organized it in such a way that the show never got maudlin at saying goodbye, along with all the pyro, smoke, streamers, and confetti left in their budget.
I think there’s a health issue behind Deryck’s decision to call a halt to Sum 41. Sure, he’s saying their latest album (Heaven x Hell, which is an album for each side of their personality) feels like a bookend and he’s ready for something new. But he is also no longer a full-time guitarist, relying on Gob’s Tom Thacker to serve as the full time second guitar. And while he’s still sounding good, and moving well, he does have a bit of a struggling ex junkie look to him. Some people just get old young.
Sum 41 were kind of ubiquitous when they broke, so I didn’t feel the need to buy any, and pop punk was never hugely my thing. But both Landmines and Dopamine off their last album are strong songs. Not as strong as their breakout hits, but those were generational staples for the TRL crowd. Their ballads are tolerable, their punkier songs are fresh and energetic, and their metal songs – while still being lighthearted – are legit. So, they were almost unique in their era
The definite highlight for me was Fat Lip, and that’s where I think they should have gone with their covers – if Maiden and Priest were the guys you praised, playing bits of Slayer and Metallica were a missed opportunity. But the crowd was also nuts for Still Waiting and In Too Deep, as expected. I was also happy that instead of closing with the usual So Long Goodbye, they kicked it up one final time with Welcome to Hell – and to retirement.
They brought two opening acts with them – first up was Gob; compatriots of the era, friends of the band, and Tom Thacker’s full time job. I definitely remembered Give up the Grudge and Soda and they were decent, but their cover of Paint it Black left a lot to be desired. The middle band was local punk band Pup; I remember them when they first broke as a new wave post screamo band in the early 2010s, but since then, they’ve evolved into something that is too middle of the road for my taste. Disappointing, since their earlier stuff like Reservoir was really strong.
All and all, a really strong 4 ½ hours of music though, and a good start to the year

Quiet Winter so far just 2 Broadway plays in January (& Juliet and Moulin Rouge) making the wife very happy. This month two small local shows, one a Motown revue called Divas at My Fathers Place and later this month a Genesis tribute band called Seconds Out. We were of course supposed to see Aerosmith at MSG this month but that is over.

Saw Billy Gibbons Tuesday night. Solo tour, with Chris Layton on drums and Mike Flanigin on bass and organ. Small club - I think capacity is < 1k (just saw the newspaper review said it's 500 capacity - I thought it was a little more). The preview in the paper said not to expect more than one or two ZZ Top tunes, which was what I expected since it was BFG, not ZZ Top.
They were wrong - it was mostly ZZ Top. And it kicked ass. It was a very loose show - not sloppy, but not like the ZZ Top arena shows. Stage set was just Gibbons' stacks at center stage, drums stage right, organ stage left. No video, no costume changes. No guitar changes, for that matter. They just walked out and played. Mostly ZZ Top material, with a few covers tuned in, and a few stories, like how Gibbons met Jimi Hendrix, which led into "Foxy Lady". Volume was very reasonable for a club show (mid-90s dbs - when I saw Glenn Hughes there, it was more small arena volume). Closest thing I have to a complaint is that the show ran 85-90 minutes - could have used another 30 or so. But when I saw ZZ Top (headlining) last summer, their set was only about 75 minutes.

Cool!
I had the pleasure of seeing Billy Gibbons up close at a club here on LI a few years ago, I was just feet away.

Not a concert per se but in March there will be a Hans Zimmer concert film available at theaters called Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamonds In The Desert. Now I have seen Hans Zimmer in concert (at Radio City) and he is not to be missed. Guthrie Govan is his guitarist for Aristrocrat fans.

Last night I saw Dream Theater in Raleigh, NC on the second show of their U.S. tour, their first with founding drummer Mike Portnoy in 13 years. The show was great, sonically & visually. The biggest surprises for me were no Portnoy drum solo and Portnoy not saying a word. He usually likes to be the MC so I'm wondering if part of his/their decision to rejoin the group included him "just being the drummer" (and occasional backing vocalist).

You’re right, that is unusual for Mike. I’ve seen him numerous times in the past decade with many bands (Transatlantic / Flying Colors/ Winery Dogs/ Sons Of Apollo/ Metal Allegiance) and as the MC for the CTTE and he always has a drum solo and is usually the MC of that evenings entertainment.

I do remember Jimbo seeing Paul’s final concert at MSG many years ago (I didn’t attend that one). I am surprised at his age and vocal capability that he is even doing this.
