My buddy Greg was telling me on the phone that it's the Scooby Doo formula -- the show was such a huge hit that some elements were always copied from it in that era, hence the Super Friends with all those teen sidekicks and dogs and stuff. Cringer was Scooby Doo and Orko was the magical version of the precocious kid who gets himself in over his head.
