Anyone know how to unlock an OPPO UDP-205 blu-ray player?
I have a copy of Model Shop which is a region B, 1080 Blu-ray disc.
I thought that the UDP series were supposed to be region free, but apparently not those sold in the US.
I nosed around a bit on the net on how to unlock it but the results looked a bit risky.
I seem to remember some talk here about a relatively easy way to unlock the players but no luck finding it.
Anyone have any suggestions/advice?

You have to physically mod it. https://www.220-electronics.com/region- ... n-kit.htmlI went this route. I am not an electrical engineer, but I used to work with very expensive laboratory instruments and have tons of experience installing power supplies and PCBs. If you don't mind opening up the OPPO yourself and installing this, IMO this is a good option to make the OPPO region-free. But be aware, it's not just taking the cover off and plugging this little PCB in, you have to remove the cover and then take out a couple PCBs to get where you need to go. The same page linked above has the option where you can ship them the player and they will do the install. I cannot vouch for that because I ordered the part and did the install myself. IMO, the price for them to do the install is too high. I also think Oppo's are rare and expensive enough where I would not ship it to anyone other than Oppo Digital. When I was looking into doing the mod, I saw some people on ebay have software on a flash drive...where you could plug the flash drive in and that would allow it to be region free. I think these players do have a USB port on the back panel, so a flash drive could be installed there and wouldn't always be sticking out of the front of the player. How effective they are, I don't know as I never tried it. I do have this 220 Electronics "mod PCB" in my Oppo and it works. Hopefully I'll get another decade plus out of my Oppo. But I've already come to the conclusion that, when it dies, I will likely go with two Blu-ray players...a higher end one for the majority of my collection, and a cheaper region free one to watch my region B collection which I have quite a few of now (which will likely be a cheap Sony that has the ability to also handle SACD). https://www.220-electronics.com/region- ... ayers.htmlSo above is the page with their modded players. I'm pretty sure these are new products but will be open-boxed for them to do the mod. It might not be all that bad of an idea to just grab another player if you think you'll eventually have a nice little collection of Region B Blu's.

I may look first for the flash drive - not too afraid of taking the lid off and following the directions. The comments on the site seem to indicate it's not very difficult and only takes about 10 minutes... the only thing I'm cautious about is damaging the player. Since they are out of the business it would be very upsetting to lose the player. I have been absolutely stunned at what the player does for even regular DVDs, not to mention Blu-rays and 4K discs.

In all honesty, the instructions they send you aren't very good. It has pictures of where to plug the PCB in, and that part is detailed, but most of the rest is remove this, remove that without details of how to do so. Check out this video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7fFwZEZnW8If my memory is correct, the mod they send you plugs into the main/digital board. So you will need to do everything up to about 4:15 minutes of this video, then plug in the mod and then put it all back together. If you feel comfortable with everything they do in the video, then you should be alright to order the part and do the mod yourself. Again, if my memory is correct, 10 minutes is reasonable for an experienced tech who works on these units frequently. I think it took me about 30 minutes when I did it. That 30 minutes was not due to difficulty, but rather having to poke around and find that last screw that was holding this PCB in...what cable is still connected that is not allowing me to take this out. I didn't have a video like this to guide me, so the process was longer. You'll have a ton of screws lying around when it is all apart (probably about 40), so make sure you keep all those straight as to what screws go where. Do not just grab a mug and throw them all in there with the idea that you'll figure all that out at the end. You'll be able to figure it out, but it might end of being a real headache.

After checking on your links I did a search on oppo dvd player flash drive and got to this site - https://www.oppodigital.com.au/pages/su ... vd-regionswhich shows how to create a CD to unlock the player for any region. As soon as my wife finishes working (her office has our only PC with a CD drive in it) I will try to see if I can get that to work before I go any further....

That's pretty cool. Yeah, I would definitely try that first as it is FREE (unless you want to cost the < 1 dollar you probably paid for the blank disk). Hopefully it will also allow you to play region free Blu-rays, I don't see that specifically mentioned so maybe it will only work for DVDs.

As soon as my wife finishes working (her office has our only PC with a CD drive in it) I will try to see if I can get that to work before I go any further.... Well no good results .... The download and product install were fine. Copied the file to the CD. Went to the Oppo UDP-205, inserted the disc and within 5 seconds the tray opened and the disc was ejected..so far just as I expected... However when I put the Blu-ray in, the same message came up - region not supported. Tried it again - same result. Went to my other OPPO UDP-203 and tried it there with the same results. One thing I noticed on the site, which is Australian I believe , was that it on referenced 203 series and below with the troubleshooting and FAQs. I will get with their online chat and see what they have to say before going on to the next option....

My guess would be that it unlocks the player for DVD all regions play, but not Blu-ray.

I unlocked my Denon 3910 DVD players years ago using that CD-R method to satisfaction but then I moved onto Blu-ray players that are more difficult to unlock. Buying one of those refurbs would be the answer if you have to have an unlocked player, the Sony is a good one as it does 4k and SACD/ DVDA too.
Currently I use a Sony X800 for 4k and my occasional SACD or DVDA discs.

I am not much into home theatre, so I have a question for you guys that will be pretty dumb. I have recently accumulated a few 4K discs due to them being included in Blu-ray/4K combo packs. Some of the 4K discs have different cuts or soundtracks of the movies that I would like to watch, but won't play in my older Sony Blu-ray, so I was thinking of getting the Sony X800. Will it play them and display on my older (pre 4K) monitor? I realize it won't be making maximum use of the definition because it's not a 4K TV, but I just want to watch them.
