Actually, the Kree Skrull war was 70s, but it doesn't 'feel' seventies to me.

Some great stuff there. Tough to choose, and some other choices also deserve honorable mention.

The David Michelinie/Bob Layton run on Iron Man deserves a mention.

The Steve Gerber "Defenders" run gets a lot of love, but I always liked the issues that came AFTER that--the "Who Remembers Scorpio" arc and other stories by David Anthony Kraft.

That's also the era that saw the introduction of the Ringer, who has for some reason always been one of my favorite obscure villains.

Other - Howard The Duck; whether Val Mayerik or Gene Colan drew it, I'm a big fan of this comic. The B&W series - although written by Bill Mantlo, who's my second favourite Marvel author - had stories that weren't as good as Steve Gerber's, although they weren't terrible...just not as good, IMO.

Howard became a proper part of popular culture, and even 'ran for President' in 1976. Despite being a satirical character (or maybe because of it) Howard unexpectedly became mainstream for a while.

Goodwin/Simonson Manhunter was the best Marvel run of the 70s, just hidden in a DC book.

The 70s is a huge time period. It covers Avengers 74-193, which was probably my favorite title at the time. Here's 8 good stories right here:
• Avengers #74 – Pursue the Panther
• Kree-Skrull War (Avengers #89–97, 1971–1972)
• Avengers/Defenders War (Avengers #115–118 & Defenders #8–10, 1973)
• Celestial Madonna Saga (Avengers #129–135 & Giant-Size Avengers #2–4, 1974–1975)
• Serpent Crown Saga (primarily in Avengers #141–144, 147–149, 1975–1976)
• The Bride of Ultron / Vision Quest (Avengers #161–162, 1977)
• Korvac Saga (Avengers #167–168, 170–177, 1978)
• Nights of Wundagore /Yesterday's Quest (Avengers #181–187, 1979)

And Dark Phoenix wasn't even even in the 1970s. She was getting there, getting really close.

As a side note, I am getting pretty close to finishing my Marvel Omnibus collection of Silver Age up to Bronze Age 1978/79,
which I chose as my cut-off point because after then I had a subscription service and bought most everything being published.
There's still plenty of Bronze Age material: Sub-Mariner, Captain Marvel, Captain America, etc. that I've never read yet.

Anyway, so I stopped after Uncanny X-Men vol. 1, which ends at 131, so I know I don't have the Dark Phoenix in collected form.
She must have been early 1980, around 134-135.

Really the whole story of Phoenix is the Dark Phoenix Saga.

So the question is "Best Marvel run of the 1970s besides X-Men."

Uncanny X-Men #134 is considered the first appearance of Dark Phoenix.
It had an on sale date of March 18th, 1980.
