It really isn't the community event that it used to be. When I was a kid we went door to door collecting money for Jerry's kids, my kids don't have any idea that the telethon exists.
I ran into a producer from the local TV station that carries it in our area, he said they don't even deal with it anymore, they just farm it out to a local freelance prodcution company.
Used to be every local and state politician wanted to be on this show, now I doubt if they'll get the mayor out there.
There had been some rather big advances in MDA research, but as was pointed out earlier, with 100+ other channels on TV, it's nowhere near the big event it was when I was growing up.

Will you guys be watching the telethon on Sunday/Monday? Something compels me to keep checking in every year to The Jerry Lewis Telethon and Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve ... a curiosity that becomes a little more morbid each time around, sadly.
I still remember coming home from the beach on a particularly warm Labor Day in 1972, just in time to catch John Lennon's impromptu appearance. That's when it was a NYC-only event. John's performance has been perserved for the ages on the Lennon Anthology box set.

Something struck me as odd this morning. The PARADE suppliment that runs in newspapers across the country has for as long as I can remember, run a picture of Jerry (or Jann Carl, or Bergeron) and that year's poster child on the Labor Day weekend issue, along with a nice article. This year, it wasn't there....no picture, no article. This morning I was greeted by Jay Leno and his chin.
