Clare Torry wins settlement against Pink Floyd

On July 8th last year we reported on a rather strange news story - that vocalist Clare Torry was taking Pink Floyd and its record company EMI, to court, suing them for damages and lost earnings.

Torry provided the improvised vocal on The Great Gig In The Sky, and was paid the standard fee of £30 for her work on January 23rd 1973. However, some thirty-one years later she claimed that she composed the song, and asked the High Court for monies she believed were due to her, a half-share of copyright ownership and a 50 per cent share, possibly worth millions, of past and future income.

Torry said they (the band and EMI) had breached her copyright and asked for damages and for "all illicit copies of the song to be destroyed". This could have resulted in the album being withdrawn from sale temporarily.

This week, the High Court judged on the side of Ms Torry, and have awarded her a half-share on copyright ownership of the song. The amount of the out-of-court settlement has not been disclosed, prompting much speculation as to the amount.

The argument which won over the High Court was the claim that Ms Torry used a special "wailing technique" which effectively helped to compose the track during its fruition in the studio. The album has, since release, been a high seller, and one of the most well-known releases of all time.

Torry has also previously been on very good terms with the band, including an appearance at both nights of Roger Waters' 1987 Wembley shows as part of his encore.

The judge was impressed by that argument? It would have had me rolling in my peruke. Ah well.

This wouldn't be the same judge who okayed the restraining order against David Letterman would it?

Waters Quit LSD After Bad Trip

Monday, February 4, 2008

Pink Floyd guitarist Roger Waters has vowed never to use drugs again following a near-death experience while using acid.

The rocker took the hallucinogenic LSD while staying at the Hotel Chelsea in New York and, shortly after, discovered he had stepped in front of traffic in the middle of Eighth Avenue, according to New York gossip column PageSix.

Mark Blake, author of Pink Floyd biography Comfortably Numb, explains, "He found himself frozen, unable to move. It was his last experience with the drug."

Roger Waters to play 'Dark Side Of The Moon' live in the UK

Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and his band will perform his band’s classic 1973 album, 'Dark Side Of The Moon', in its entirety at two UK gigs.

The star will perform at the Liverpool Echo Arena on May 15 and at London’s O2 Arena on May 18.

Waters will open both the gigs with a set featuring classic Pink Floyd songs, including some from the band’s 1979 album 'The Wall'. He will play the whole of 'Dark Side Of The Moon' for the second half of the shows.

In a statement Waters has promised that the shows will boast "state of the art" staging, lighting and sound.

Roger Waters releases giant pig at Coachella

Image

Roger Waters closed out the final night of the Coachella Festival (April 27) by performing Pink Floyd's landmark 1973 album 'Dark Side Of The Moon' and unleashing a giant inflatable pig into the sky.

The legendary performer drew a massive crowd for his main stage headlining set, which featured two parts.

The first half of Waters' nearly three-hour set featured solo and early Pink Floyd material, while the second half saw him performing 'Dark Side Of The Moon' in its entirety as well as Pink Floyd hits from 1979's 'The Wall'.

A large inflatable pig emerged onto the stage as he played 'Pigs' from 1977's 'Animals'. Graffiti scrawled on the pig said, "Don't be led to the slaughter" and "Obama" with checked ballot box next to it. It also contained illustrations of Uncle Sam holding a cleaver.

The pig was released into the night sky at the end of Waters' first set.

After a 20-minute intermission, the 64-year-old singer returned to the stage with a full band and back-up singers who breathed life into 'Dark Side Of The Moon'.

Elaborate pyrotechnics and old video images livened up the set, which culminated with a pyramid containing a rainbow prism - made famous on the album cover - rising above the stage.

Before closing out Coachella, Waters treated the crowd to Pink Floyd hits 'Another Brick In The Wall' and 'Comfortably Numb', which concluded with an elaborate fireworks display over the stage.

This is a band which needs to let go and release an official bootleg series-even if they have to mine audience recordings. They are a continual prerennial big-seller. They can still line a lot of pockets and help out charities as well. If only the big egos would just quit warring with each other.

Pink Floyd pig found 'in tatters'

Image

The giant inflatable pig which floated away during a Roger Waters concert at the weekend has been recovered in tatters in California.

The pig was found by two families on their driveways in La Quinta.

They will split the $10,000 (£5,090) reward offered by the Coachella music festival, from where the pig went missing.

Coachella spokeswoman Marcee Rondan explained: "It wasn't really supposed to happen that way."

The pig was tethered to the ground with ropes and floated away as Waters was playing the Pink Floyd song 'Pigs On The Wing'.

Pink Floyd had used inflatable pigs during their concerts in the past, and the lost animal was the same prototype as all the others, according to Rondan.

The two families who found what was left of the inflatable have also decided to share four life tickets to the Coachella Festival that were offered as part of the reward, reports BBC News.

Wonder why they want the "tattered" pig back so bad?

They probably hoped it would still be salvagable when they offered the reward. Inflatable pigs are hard to come by on short notice, I'll bet.

'Roger Waters doing 'Dark Side Of The Moon' is like Ringo doing 'Sgt Pepper's'

Death Cab For Cutie have rubbished Roger Waters recent sets playing his old band Pink Floyd's most revered album.

The bassist and his band have been performing 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' in its entirety, recently performing it at the Coachella festival, which the US indie band also played (April 25-27).

Talking about Waters' live recreation of the classic record, Death Cab For Cutie told Spin Magazine that the bassist, who wrote a lot of the songs on the album, playing the record was inappropriate because guitarist David Gilmour contributed all the best bits.

"Roger Waters doing 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' would be like Ringo performing 'Sgt. Pepper's'," declared vocalist Ben Gibbard.

"I had the same thought," added bassist Nick Harmer. "All the parts of that album I love the most are Gilmour's."

Because we all know Ringo wrote all the songs on Sgt. Pepper's.

Death Cab For Cutie is an idiotic name for a band...and very apt in the case of these guys.

Pink Floyd shunned by Glastonbury? - Tabloid Hell

Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis has apparently snubbed Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour's offer to play at this year's festival.

According to The Sun,Gilmour personally contacted Eavis offering to perform the iconic album 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' at the festival but was told he wouldn't be needed.

A source explained: "Dave has always had a soft spot for Glastonbury. He's got a window in his touring plans and thought he'd contact Michael about performing."

However the source added that Eavis felt a set from Gilmour wouldn't be what the youngsters would want to see and added: "While Michael was grateful for the offer he turned it down. He wants the event to appeal to a younger generation, and feels that Dave wouldn't".

Glastonbury takes place from June 27 to 29.

It's ironic that Waters spent so much time in the 80's loudly declaring that Gilmour, Mason and Wright were laughable for continuing to play all the old Pink Floyd stuff live....and now he's doing it himself.

Many, if not most bands, the really big ones anyway, seem to eventually become tribute bands to themselves. I'm not saying that this good or bad, but saying that that's how it seems to me- The Stones, McCartney, The Who, Waters. They play few or none of the tunes done in the latter parts of their careers. Instead, years after year, tour after tour, they perform the same hits over and over again, as if a good concert is nothing but hits. It's too bad.

When David Gilmour toured a couple of years ago, he did the prefect thing. He played his new album in its entirety for the first half of the show, which is obviously what he wanted to do. For the second half of the show, he played all or mostly Pink Floyd songs (I don't recall) which he rightly assumed most of the people wanted to hear. "On An Island" is an excellent album and I was thrilled to hear him play all of it. I'd love it if every band I go to see played their most recent album in its entirety.

So, You Wanna Sound Like Pink Floyd?

Filed under: Classic Rock News, Pink Floyd — Dale @ 9:01 am

This may be the best opportunity for guitar players to replicate that legendary sound that Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour coaxed out of his 1970 Fender Stratocaster on some of the groups’s most successful albums. Fender is preparing to release a version of the "Black Strat" on September 22, and planning to use that simple, descriptive name to for the new guitar.

In addition to its appearance being identical to Gilmour’s copy, the new "Signature Model" will also feature the same maple neck, black pick guard, shortened tremolo arm and custom electronics as Gilmour’s original.

The new axe will also be accompanied by a custom black case featuring a center pocket, plush green lining and "Fender Custom Shop David Gilmour Model" embroidery.

In addition, buyers will receive a book about the guitar by David Gilmour’s guitar technician Phil Taylor, an authentic set of strings, the same cable Gilmour himself uses, a deluxe Fender guitar strap and a David Gilmour guitar pick.

This guitar is Fender’s best effort to produce a copy of the guitar that was used on Pink Floyd albums The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall, and if history is any indication, Fender will do a fine job of cloning a famous instrument that many a Pink Floyd fan would be thrilled to own.

So what does Gilmour himself think of the new instrument? "I told Fender that it was just an ordinary Strat that I bought, but I must say they’ve done a great job of recreating it," he says.

The September 22 release will coincide with the release of Gilmour’s new triple live album entitled Live In Gdansk, which was recorded last year during his solo world tour.

Awesome news.

I'd have to sell a kidney in order to afford one, but it's cool that they're (finally) doing this. I always wondered why there wasn't one before this - even Joe Strummer has his own Strat! :D

Pink Floyd receive 2008 Polar Prize

Pink Floyd were presented with the 2008 Polar Music Prize by Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf at a ceremony at the Swedish capitol today (August 26).

The rock legends were honoured with the country's biggest music prize for their contribution to popular music, alongside American soprano Renee Fleming, who also received the award at the Stockholm Concert Hall.

Pink Floyd's Roger Waters and Nick Mason were on hand to receive the award, and said that their band members David Gilmour and Richard Wright were sorry they could not attend.

When accepting the honour, Waters recognised his 96-year old mother. "If there is any humanity and empathy in my work, which I think there is, I would rather owe it to her," he said.

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said the British rock band has made "a monumental contribution...and captured the mood and spirit of a whole generation in their reflections and attitudes," reports the Associated Press.

The winners each received a standing ovation and a prize worth $157,700.
