There's been talk of a new Picard flic, possibly directed by Bryan Singer, but it's just talk for now, just rumors, nothing confirmed.

Here's a recent interview with Patrick Stewart talking about what the next Trek movie might be:

Patrick Stewart Says STAR TREK XI May Feature Characters from Various TREK Series

By GustavoLeao / 05:18, 19 January 2006 / Feature Films

STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION star Patrick Stewart has just been interviewed on ITV's THIS MORNING show in a prelude to the UK premiere of his new show ELEVENTH HOUR.

He was again questioned about the rumours of a new TNG film. He was tight lipped but did say there was "great interest" in getting the TNG cast together again as well as including characters from the other series.

Stewart reveals, "It has been raised. Apparently there's interest in bringing THE NEXT GENERATION cast together with actors from different STAR TREK series."

Then they asked him if this meant Captain James T. Kirk would return, and he replied that he hoped so because William Shatner was a good friend. "I would love that. I'm very fond of William Shatner." he said.

Stewart also talked about X-MEN 3 and his play A CHRISTMAS CAROL. 'I've just finished a run in the West End of A CHRISTMAS CAROL and I'm now looking forward to a year in Warwickshire, Stratford upon Avon, being a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for a whole season of plays. I don't see one genre as being more significant than the other, although I'm very excited about Stratford because that was a huge part of my early career, and it meant so much to me. One of the reasons I became an actor was to do that kind of work, I didn't become an actor to work in film or television, I had no ambitions for that, it just kind of happened along the way. I think X-MEN 3 might be the best of the trilogy. It's very emotional and exciting.'

QUOTE
J.J. Abrams is becoming the next Gene Roddenberry.

Paramount is breathing life into its "Star Trek" franchise by setting "Mission: Impossible III" helmer J.J. Abrams to produce and direct the 11th "Trek" feature, aiming for a 2008 release.

Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, Abrams' producing team from "Lost," also will produce the yet-to-be-titled feature.

Project, to be penned by Abrams and "MI3" scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, will center on the early days of seminal "Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission.

Deal reflects Par's bullishness on "MI3," which launches worldwide next weekend, and underlines the goal of Paramount chief Brad Grey and prexyprexy Gail BermanGail Berman to re-energize the pipeline via high-profile tentpoles while revitalizing the Par brand with top-tier talent such as Abrams.

"MI3" is the first pic to be released that's been greenlit by Grey.

"Star Trek" has been Hollywood's most durable performer other than James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series.

Decision to relaunch "Star Trek" comes less than a year after UPN pulled the plug on "Star Trek: Enterprise""Star Trek: Enterprise" amid dismal ratings following a four-season run and four years after "Star Trek: Nemesis""Star Trek: Nemesis" turned in the worst performance of the 10 films with $43 million domestic.

Original series created by Roddenberry launched in 1966 on NBC and ended in 1969.

During the following decade, the original 78 episodes of "Trek" became staples in syndication and helped mobilize the fan base along with conventions, books and merchandise. Paramount released "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979 and saw domestic grosses hit $82 million. The next three films grossed a combined $263 million domestically, so Paramount started the second TV series, "The Next Generation," in 1987, with Rick Berman and Roddenberry co-exec producing.

Under Sherry Lansing's tenure, Rick Berman had been teamed several years ago with Jordan Kerner and Kerry McCluggage to develop an 11th feature set in the early days of Starfleet Academy.

Im not a big fan of the franchise...liked the movies, the original series and Next gen...then got sick of the spinoffs...Enterpise was cool...but they cut it short.

Rick Berman quitely got the heave-ho (good idea) and JJ seems to be good at this kind of thing...what does everyone think?

(and yes i am aware that this rumor of a Star Trek early years has been floating around for 20 years..but this seems to be moving forward).

Oh yeah IDW will be publishing Start Trek comics this year or the next...they acquired the licence.

Linda - I think it would be fun to have Shatner and Nimow in a framing sequence set "now" and the bulk of the movie as flashbacks...who would you cast as young Kirk and Spock?

I've always liked the idea of Junior Star Trek, whether it was TNG-era or pre-Classic (post-Enterprise), anything in the Academy.

I don't know from ack-tawrz, but there was one posted here ages ago who looks SO much like a young DeForrest Kelly. Can't remember his name. He might be too old for an Academy movie, though.

I wonder will this re-ignite the franchise or is it just dead and buried for good ?

That would go a long way in winning over the fans, prepare for the internet shitstorm if casting begins.

Ha! My thoughts exactly Linda.

It had a certain amount of zeitgest and lasting power (and the classic series, movies, etc always will exist) but at this point its some corporate owned entity run by fans turned pro with no involvement from the original creators (or the people who could have brought it into the present - like Nic Meyers).

If Paramount wants a new sci fi franchise..why dont they just create one? I mean at this point isnt name recognition hurting rather than helping? (ie: most fans of the franchise are jaded and wont accept any reworking of the concepts)..

I guess we'll see what happens...!

J.J. Abrams has produced a couple of very interesting shows, so this has my attention. If MI:3 tanks because everyone thinks Tom is a nut and doesn't want to see his movies anymore, part of the blame may stick to Abrams and cause this project to get sidelined.

My thought for the series is to wait a few more years until technology has advanced enough to produce reaistic looking CGI Kirk, Spock, and McCoy characters based on the original cast in their prime. The FINAL FANTASY movie of a few years ago made that look more and more like a possibility.

How about Ryan Reynolds as Kirk. He does a pretty good Shatner voice.

And maybe Ian Somerhalder as Spock?
